1.8 Theoretical Framework of the Present Study Gender, motivation and English performance are the three variables concerned in the present study. The three variables are interrelated with each other and the relations are described in various theories and concepts. The present study, however, uses three theories or concepts to explain the three variables. They are known as Gardner 's Components of Motivation (1985), Lamberts ' Social Psychology Theory (1974) and also McClelland 's Achievement Motivation Theory (1958). Figure 1.2 illustrates the theoretical framework of the present study. Figure 1.2: The Theoretical Framework of the Present Study 1.8.1 Gardner’s Components of Motivation The present study refers to Gardner’s components of motivation as the base to explain the whole context of motivation. There are various ideas of what motivation is all about, but the present study believed that Gardner provides the most explicit and clear mechanism of motivation in second language learning (SLL). The mechanism of motivation by Gardner (1985) consists of three aspects which are the motivational intensity or the effort, the desire to achieve the goal of learning the language and the attitudes toward the act of learning the language. Gardner (1985) believed that motivation must include the three elements as the individual who has the desire to learn the language and put the effort in learning a language while having a positive attitude towards the language is considered
