1.8 Theoretical Framework of the Present Study Gender, motivation and English performance are the three variables concerned in the present study. The three variables are interrelated with each other and the relations are described in various theories and concepts. The present study, however, uses three theories or concepts to explain the three variables. They are known as Gardner 's Components of Motivation (1985), Lamberts ' Social Psychology Theory (1974) and also McClelland 's Achievement Motivation Theory (1958). Figure 1.2 illustrates the theoretical framework of the present study. Figure 1.2: The Theoretical Framework of the Present Study 1.8.1 Gardner’s Components of Motivation The present study refers to Gardner’s components of motivation as the base to explain the whole context of motivation. There are various ideas of what motivation is all about, but the present study believed that Gardner provides the most explicit and clear mechanism of motivation in second language learning (SLL). The mechanism of motivation by Gardner (1985) consists of three aspects which are the motivational intensity or the effort, the desire to achieve the goal of learning the language and the attitudes toward the act of learning the language. Gardner (1985) believed that motivation must include the three elements as the individual who has the desire to learn the language and put the effort in learning a language while having a positive attitude towards the language is considered

Motivation is a Cause of Dreams Brian Tracy once said, “ Make your life a masterpiece; imagine no limitations on what you can be, have or do.” Everything that Walter has been through leads up to him wanting to buy the house. Walter wanted to move his family to the new house and he didn 't let anyone or anything stop him. Mama had dreams and was willing to work to be able to move the family to a new house. Lorraine Hansberry 's play A Raisin In The Sun proves that dreams generate motivation which is shown through the character of Walter in the resolution of the story by how the money could change their lives, through the conflict between Walter and the housing development, and Mama through the plot about wanting to purchase the house.

In China, Peacock and Ho (2003) researched 1,006 Chinese students of English and report that ‘females reported significantly higher use of all strategy categories; they also report a much higher use of individual strategies’ that are also associated with higher proficiency. In Malaysia Punithavalli (2003) conducted a research study with 170 ESL learners and found that female learners used greater strategies in and outside of classroom compared to the male learners. In many studies across different cultures there are important differences between genders in the use of social/ affective strategies with females using them more often (Zeynali 2012; Oxford 1995; Mohamed Amin,

Motivation is understood as the activation of behaviour Herb (1955). There are two main theories of motivation in the field of Psychology. The two theories of motivation are the drive (internal) theories and incentive value (external) theories. There is a vast contradistinction between these two theories which serves to create an ideal topic of debate and unique tool of analysis to understand or find the possible causes pertaining to the case study of Amanda and her failure during her first semester at university. This essay will break down these two sets theories into description, strengths and weaknesses as well as link each analysis to Amanda's situation by attribution in order to reach a conclusion as to which theory may provide a better
Second Language Learning comes with great difficulties for every student, but when a student is already having difficulties with learning in general, second language learning proves to be that much tougher. Students who are classified with learning disabilities will feel defeated. How do we teach these students to find the motivation to learn the language? There are several motivation theories that can conclude the behaviors for both Wilkerson and Agua. As we can see from the context above, Wilkerson and Agua tried to achieve their goals using different approaches and fortunate enough for Agua, he is succeeding. This is because we can deduce that Agua is self-actualized person. Referring to Maslow’ Hierarchy of Needs theory, self-actualized people are those were fulfilled and doing all they were capable of. The growth of self-actualization refers to the need for personal growth and discovery that is present throughout a person’s life.
Behaviorist, cognitivist, humanistic, and psychoanalytic are four important trends among the present motivational theories. John Broadus Watson and Sigmund Freud are important theorists of these trends. The behaviorist trend shows the influence of different physiological conditions on human behavior, Durso et. al (2016). The writer states that the behaviorist theory prioritizes the environmental factors for pointing out the behavior as per stimuli and reinforcing. After the criticism of behaviorist theory, the cognitive view emerged in 1970s.
Motivational theory. Motivation can be defined as one wish to fulfill a goal which is connected with the energy and one’s determination to fulfill it. There are two driving factors of motivation. The first one is intrinsic motivation which means that it comes from within a person. The second one is extrinsic motivation which means that it is the outside forces which is not controlled by an individual (Cherry, 2015).
Numerous research has shown that intrinsic motivation is associated with, and predicts positive academic outcomes. On the other hand, individuals with lower levels of intrinsic motivation have shown declines in academic progression throughout elementary and middle school years. Intrinsic motivation has been defined in the text as classroom conduct, determination, cognitive adaptability, coping skills, and commitment (Haimovitz, Wormington, & Corpus, 2011). Other research on intrinsic motivation compiled by Deci, Koestner, & Ryan (1999) has also shown an associated with external rewards and intrinsic drive.
