THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This chapter presents the relevant theory, review of related literature, conceptual framework and hypothesis to make the research clearly and understandable in connection with the study, “Pupils’ Perspective on Social Media as a Learning Tool.”
Relevant Theory
This paper is guided by the theory of Lev Vygotsky about constructivism or constructivist theory.
Lev Vygotsky’s is a Russian Psychologist, who stresses the importance of looking at each child as an individual who learns distinctively or different from another. The overall goal of education according to Vygotsky is to generate and lead development which is the result of social learning through internalization of culture and social relationship. With

The students today have been labeled as Digital Natives by (Presky, 2001) because according to him “they spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, videogames, video cams, digital music players, cell phones and all the other toys and tools of the digital age.”A report from Pew Research Center (2010) revealed that 73% of the teenagers (meaning they are students) use some form of social networking by incorporating social media into the lives of the students in the …show more content…
It represents as a useful tool mainly for education and communication. Also it helps students to multitask because of their demanding class schedule; they are not preferred on creating multiple messages for individual because for them it is time consuming. Instead they use Facebook and emails to do such thing for their classmates, friends and even family. Like most of the students did, when the discussion inside the classroom ends they can continue their conversations through group chat that all of the students in a class are intact in that kind of social media. In group page, it is use to posts and share lectures for the sake of all and especially for other students who missed classes and serves as a group study sessions or commonly known as group discussion. On the other hand, when it comes to the get the public opinion when the students have projects and some certain issue to be display on public they can extend the discussion or forum and activities to the public only to find out what peers think about it and their opinion, suggestion or feedback towards that issue and
Introduction “Learning is not development; however, properly organized learning results in mental development and sets in motion a variety of developmental processes that would be impossible part from learning. Thus, learning is a necessary and universal aspect of the process of developing culturally organized, specifically human, psychological functions” (Vygotsky, 1978, p. 90). The Russian psychologist of the early twentieth century, Lev Vygotsky, laid down the foundation for an entire school of thought to later be known as the socio-cultural perspective on human development. Vygotsky differentiated himself from other psychologists of the time by placing an emphasis on societies influence on development and the processes by which development
Some of the negative results of the increasing use of social media are a greater change of friend groups and acquaintances, increased awareness of the livelihood of our fellow peers, and more exposure to the world around us. With all these results, it is easy to see why young adults continue to become distant and flexible later on in their lives than those of previous generations. One of the most prominent consequences of the continued use of social media is the increase in average age of
Brief History Jean Piaget was a Twentieth century Swiss psychologist and was the first psychologist to systematically study the cognitive development of children. Thomas (2005) wrote that early in Piaget’s career he worked with children and his observations and interactions with the students led him to the theory that a young person's cognitive processes are inherently different from those of adults (pp. 188-9). According to Ahmad, et al. (2005) , Piaget showed that when compared to adults, young children think in differently and he then came to the conclusion that cognitive development was an ongoing process which occurred due to maturation and interaction with the environment (p. 72).
Instead of wanting to open a new social media account children should do their homework, spend time with family, or go do outdoor activities with friends. If children have social media accounts they will “spend hours browsing and surfing the web”, they will only want to be using it all the time and they will leave all the priorities last (Keim). Now in this generation “our social interaction face to face is decreasing” because we now have advanced accounts that keeps us away from real life activities, and children are influenced by it (Smarty). Children’s time will be wasted in social media because it is not doing any good to them. That time that was wasted on social media could have been used for something way more productive out of the internet.
A study conducted by Tsitsika and Janikan in 2013 stated that the usage of the internet continuously grow. About 32.7% of the world’s population has access to the social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Wikis and many more which let people to share their interests easily with others everywhere. So the reciprocal connectedness all over the world is growing rapidly due to the use of the internet. When students use technological gadgets like laptops and others by the

When the young people prioritise these less than meaningful relationships, the more important connections like parents-children and sisters-brothers relationship will weaken because the less they communicate with each other, the higher the risk for the meaningful relationship to be damaged. They also score low in schools because of the distractions like video games, watching videos, and chatting with known and unknown person in social media sites. People never realise that all of these kind of distractions are actually the distractions that they created themselves. Young people may cause their future to be beaten by their own current attitude because ‘how’ they think now is ‘how’ they are going to be in the
The purpose of education is to create the “catalyst”, - the interest, the imagination, the self-confidence, the enthusiasm for further knowledge that helps a person grow beyond what they believe they can be. Education should help develop skills and knowledge, so students can be productive members of society. The more knowledge you have, the more opportunities you have in life. I think back to my childhood and the teachers that made an impact in my life. I want to be that catalyst for students.
