Theoretical Perspective In Language Teaching

By striving to review current approaches and methods in language learning and teaching, one faces in literature three different theoretical perspectives in language instruction and nature of language proficiency each of which implicitly or explicitly gives us information about the teaching methods. Structural view is the first and the most traditional one that views language as a system of structurally-related elements for coding meaning the most conspicuous examples of which are Audiolingualism, Total Physical Response, and the Silent Way. The second tradition is the functional view which takes language as a means for the expression of the functional meaning an example of which is the communicative movement in language teaching. ESP movement which begins not from a structural theory of language but from a functional view of leaning likewise lies in this category.
