The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is used in identifying the most important factors that stand in the way of achieving a goal. The TOC takes a scientific approach to improvements by hypothesizing every system to ensure it locates the trigger that acts as a restriction. (Rouse, 2011). The TOC process has five main steps. In step one, TOC identifies the constraint is where a manager can figure out which part of the process is keeping them from reaching a goal. An example of this would be if Nissan noticed they were running out of an important part for a vehicle in the middle of building a car. Issues like these should not have a band aid fix to them and should not be put to the side because a solution does need to be found.
Another process that Operations Manager use daily is total quality management or TQM. TQM ensures that the products and services have met the needs of the customers. (Learn about Quality, ND) “These concepts consist of continuous improvement, six sigmas, employee empowerment, benchmarking, just-in-time, Taguchi concepts, and knowledge of the TQM tools “(Heizer, 2017). The continuous improvement step covers every aspect of the operation to see what can be improved. Nissan could be using this step to look over how their cars are made and if there is a more cost or time efficient way of building those cars for the customers without changing the safety of the employees or the vehicle. Step two, six sigmas; gives a statistical sense of a process. It gives a percentage accuracy of a certain problem by following an improvement model that uses check lists, scatter diagrams, cause and effect diagrams.
