A hero is one who portrays noble characteristics, willing to face obstacles and has the ability to handle both physical and mental strengths. It is difficult to play the role of a hero. Heroes take on a difficult role in the myths “Theseus” and “The Adventures of Odysseus” by Edith Hamilton. Heroes must be determined, as they cannot give up in the middle of the journey. They need to be courageous, as they have to overcome hazardous obstacles through their expedition. Also, heroes must have the abilities to make judgements and face consequences if they make a bad decision. It is difficult to be a hero because one must be determined, brave, and have the ability to make judgements. WHY? Firstly, it is challenging to be a hero, as one must have …show more content…
In the myth Theseus, Theseus needs to make a wise decision towards the end of the journey- whether he should believe his admiring wife’s note or his beloved son’s words. Theseus chooses to believe his wife’s words over his son’s, as he says ‘“Go. You are banished from the land”’ (Hamilton “Theseus” 215). Theseus makes a poor judgement as he chooses his wife’s note over his son, as it is actually his son who is telling the truth. Due to his poor decision, he must accept the death of his son. To play the role of a hero is difficult, as they need to make appropriate judgements using their instincts. The option they pick, can severally change their lives, like how Theseus’ life changes due to the loss of his son. In everyday life, one must be able to pick right from wrong. One must prepare to suffer consequences, if they make a poor judgement. However, Odysseus portrays the difficulties of being a hero, as he also needs to make decisions throughout his journey. Odysseus and the crew on his ship make a poor judgement as “… they saw a land, but they had better have stayed on the stormy sea for it was he country of the Laestrygons, a people of gigantic size and cannibals too” (Hamilton “The Adventures of Odysseus” 295) During this deadly situation of their expedition, the hero chooses to arrive at the land, without realizing the possible dangers of the judgement. …show more content…

Philip Zimbardo once stated, “I'm saying to be a hero it means you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes always are making a sacrifice. Heroes always take a risk. Heroes always deviant. Heroes are always doing something that most people don't and we want to change.” I completely agree with what Mr. Zimbardo said, A hero is someone who will always be willing to make a sacrifice for the greater good.
A hero can not endure the pain a 10 year war brings, nor fight for his and his men’s lives on the way back home. Odysseus leads his men through all the islands of minor God’s and Goddesses, and many monsters. At the island of the Lotus Eaters, he tied his men to the ship and plugged their ears so they would not hear the enticing music. As a result, he escaped this threat without even coming close to the enemy, and he never gave up. If he was not a hero, he would have killed his men and himself on the way back.
Heroes face god-like judgment though the obstacles they face, and they let it extend to the judgment of their identity and their characteristics. This is what all heroes have to traverse in their tales, it places their actions into effect, to show who they are in the face of adversity. This is done by many heroes from many tales, such an example could be Beowulf, in his journey as an old king famed at a young age, slayer of monsters, but one stands from him and all others: Odysseus, the brave king from Homer’s epic the Odyssey. This tale speaks of the journey of Odysseus returning home from the Trojan war, facing wrath of gods and other abominations in his realm. His actions throughout his trek home shows some of the traits that Odysseus possesses,

The Greatest Hero Heroes have been within or myths, stories, and legends since the beginning of civilization, they inspire us, warn us, teach us. Odysseus is a hero. In my opinion a hero is someone who fights for what they believe in and fights for others. A hero gives his life to save another person no matter what the risk. Odysseus fought for what he needed. He fought for his wife, and his child.
After Odysseus rams Polyphemus’s eye, Odysseus and his crew needed a way to escape. “I took the woolliest ram, the choicest of the flock, and hung myself under his kinky belly, pulled up tight, with fingers twisted deep in sheepskin ringlets for an iron grip” (340-345). By hiding in the rams Cyclops he was unable to feel the men because of the rams thick coats. Odysseus shows he performs brave deeds by coming up with a brave plan to get his men out of Polyphemus’s island. True heroes are brave because they face difficult situations and overcomes obstacles.
The concept of hero has been interpreted in many ways throughout the ages. Hero have gone from knights slaying dragons and rescuing the princess, to heroes who save the world with their supernatural-like powers, to a modern day hero who is someone who has noble qualities and is regarded as a role model. In the epic, The Odyssey, by Robert Fagles, the heroic Odysseus is a well known in Greek mythology. However, although Odysseus is the most respected, honorable hero of Greek mythology he is not a modern hero. A modern day hero is someone who puts their life on the line to save the lives of other innocent people.
To be considered a hero, you have to have the qualities of a hero. Many people think to be a hero you need to be strong and a good leader. While that is important, there are also many other qualities a person should have to be said hero. To become an epic hero, you need to be a savior of a large group and live a heroic lifestyle. Those are the first two qualities you must own.

An epic hero is a someone with impressive qualities who is widely admired for completing many awe-inspiring tasks. In the world of the Ancient Greeks’ Odysseus is a household name. His mix of cleverness and recklessness allows him to finagle himself out of dangerous situations. Every hero in a hero's journey showcases multiple exceptionally fine traits and abilities that make it possible for them to be victorious. “The Odyssey” is a wonderful example of the classic hero's journey. In modern society, heroes don’t need to be physically strong or slay monsters, we see heroes as one forms a change in society. A prime example is Malala, an activist for females’ education who risked her life to support her thoughts about the world. The characteristics needed to become a hero has interchanged from ancient society to modern society.
