From the article “Pros and con” it states “Students always want to wear the “popular” brand of clothing and they talk about it too which gets them off topic” (Hertzler,1). By having school uniforms students will stay more focused on schoolwork instead of what the “popular trend” or brand is for that moment. Students like talking about in class what style or type of clothing they’re getting. Usually kids also compliment each others clothes which would get them off topic and not paying attention in class.
With time spent on trying to change people's mindset, this can reach to a much bigger demographic which is the ultimate goal. Many students that know uniforms will be beneficially, but don’t agree with school uniforms will continue to disagree with implementing them. It can be easily agreed that school uniforms may take away their self-expression in school, but what matters more in school is the way of learning. It is the school 's responsibility to maintain an environment open to diversity and enforcing dress codes does not help with that. If a school’s dress codes are making the students wear a uniform then that makes it harder on the parents because they have to make the expensive purchase of the uniforms. The kids should be able to dress the way they want and not have to worry about buying clothes you can’t even wear to school. According to the article, “School Uniforms: Should…”, “Opponents [of dress codes] insist that fashion is an important venue for young people to display their individuality and identity.” Also from “School Uniforms: Should…” Opponents [of dress codes], however, argue that uniforms stifle creativity. Another problem that arises from the lack of individuality is the fact that student are not getting the experience of picking out clothes for school. According to Soraya Chemaly, there are times when dressing more mature is just fine for students, especially girls. (Chemaly 40). Overall if students are allowed to dress themselves and express their own individuality like adults, they will get a better school experience.
However, too many students are so self-focused that they cannot unlearn their selfish behaviors for the sake of finding the best-suited solution that can be achieved through collaborative thinking. As Twenge explains, “Because the school programs emphasize being ‘special’ rather than encouraging friendships, we may be training an army of little narcissists instead of raising kids’ self-esteem” (Twenge 504). Twenge obviously believes that school programs are trying too hard to preserve a child’s self-esteem instead of actually helping them to build skills that would help them. For example, many students from both genders place much attention on their physical appearance, sometimes in hopes of impressing the opposite gender. Students can instead focus on their studies and schoolwork in a single-sex educational environment since many of these schools require a school uniform.
