DBQ - Democracy in Colonial America Essay There were both democratic and undemocratic features in colonial America, as democracy was a work in progress. In period 4, the national culture of the United States changed, and started to develop a modern democracy through new democratic ideals and changing their society to fit those ideals. There were many democratic ideals such as voting, the pursuit of happiness and justice and the colonies helped shape their society in many ways. One of the first democratic Ideal was voting. Transforming Democracy From 1824-1840 were the years considered “The Jacksonian Era” in the United States. This was thought have as a huge influence on the changing democracy of our country. Our government already changed excessively in the previous Jeffersonian Era, to the Jacksonian Era, and it has also changed indefinitely from the Jacksonian Era to today’s democracy. In 1831 French sociologist and political theorist Alexis De Tocqueville and a lawyer he befriended named Gustave de Beaumont, spent nine months traveling around America studying its prisons and came back with a full report on the cultural, political and psychological life in America. He believed that religion and equality were the greatest ideas and they were the most advanced in the United States and that's why democracy worked so well in America.
When trying to define a word such as Liberalism it seems difficult to find a solid definition. There are different forms of liberalism and different meanings depending on the time period it is being applied to (idea taken from Phil Badger author from philosophynow). To solve this ambiguity, I’ve decided to define liberalism based on the time period in which I will be conducting my research. Liberalism in the 1700s was the belief of freedom and equals rights generally associated with the enlightenment thinkers, John Locke and Montesquieu (as defined by wikipedia.org). Liberalism didn’t start in the 1700s.

Roland Marchand is a professor of history at the University of California, and in a selection from Marchand’s writings titled “The Appeal of the Democracy of Goods”, Marchand discusses one of the many techniques available to advertising: Democracy of Goods. Marchand provides the reader with a brief history of the Democracy of Goods and what is actually is. The Pitfalls of Liberalism was a document by Stokely Carmichael who is known as one of the most recognized exponents of the “Black Power.” Movement. Stokely Carmichaels main argument in this document is that the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King along with other civil rights activists had reached an endpoint since the use of “Widespread resistance within America” (238) was in effect. Throughout the semester, we have never seen a document where a leaders only solution to advance is by “calling for the mobilization of organized violence by African-Americans in order to seize political power” (238). The concept of calling upon one single race to take action is new.
Classical Liberalism makes two important promises; to create a state that is free from oppression and give its citizens freedom. The United State has tried to keep true to these principles till this day, but has failed to address the detrimental effects of capitalism in our society. Many argue that classical liberalism is exactly what the founding fathers intended for America. They wanted its citizens to have civil rights, freedom, and protection, rather than a controlling monarchist system, and at first it was functionally a dream come true.
