A Thirst for Power that Lead to Destruction “The lust and the hunger? The thirst for power? And thus it is brewed, clearly, the heart’s deadliest poison to integrity.” (Criss Jamie) The thirst for power is rooted in one of humanity’s base traits: greed. Left unchecked, it can tear down entire civilizations. The book Divergent by the author Veronica Roth is a story about a sixteen-year-old girl named Beatrice Prior, who lives in a futuristic dystopian society. This society is divided into five factions: Erudite the intelligent, Abnegation the selfless, Candor the honest, Amity the kind and the Dauntless the brave. Upon discovering Beatrice is divergent, a dangerous categorization, she struggles with her identity, trying to belong in a sea of …show more content…
Throughout the novel, it is seen that Jeannine will go to great lengths to eliminate any threat to her plans to obtain power. Which includes killing off the Divergent: people who belong to more than one faction. Divergents pose a great threat to Erudite’s power because they can’t be controlled. “But our minds move in a dozen different directions. We can’t be confined to one way of thinking, and that terrifies our leaders. It means that no matter what they do, we will always cause trouble for them. I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent. And I can’t be controlled.” (Roth, 442) This quote accentuates why Jeannine goes to great lengths to kill the divergent. In addition, the governmental faction: Abnegation, stood in Erudites way to obtain any power over the dystopian society. Thus, Erudite made orders to kill all the political leaders from Abnegation as well as anyone who stood in their way. “No,” says Tobias through gritted teeth. “But at least his evil didn’t involve the widespread manipulation of an entire faction and the systematic murder of every political leader we have.” (Roth, …show more content…
The intelligent faction believed Dauntless: a faction known for their bravery and physical power, were becoming a threat to their authority. In effort to maintain their dominion, Jeannine orchestrated a plan to possess the dauntless society into following her every command. She believed she could use Dauntless to create fear of disobedience in the other factions. “She sees problems and forms solutions based on the data she collects. Abnegation stood in the way of her desire for power, so she found a way to eliminate it. She didn’t have an army, so she found one in Dauntless.” (Roth, 432) This quote activity demonstrates how Erudite orchestrated an entire plan to control the other factions through fear, as well as take down a potential enemy. Not only did Erudite possess Dauntless to instill fear but they used the dauntless faction as their own army. They programmed their brains to kill all Divergents and political leaders. “Weak-willed,” Tobias scoffs. “It requires a strong will to manipulate a stimulation, last time I checked. Weak Willed is mind-controlling an army because it’s too hard for you to train one yourself.” (Roth,
Both Anthem and Divergent’s societies try to make the world “perfect,” which is impossible because there will always be rebels like Tris and Equality, that go against the system. In Divergent, all of the different factions have their own idea on how to make the world better. Dauntless’ idea for making the world “better” is by being in control of your fears ,which is stated as, “ ‘but becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it, that’s the point’ ”
The responder can develop a superior knowledge of dystopian societies through the comparison of Victor Kelleher’s novel ‘Taronga’ and Neil burgers Film ‘Divergent’, as both can be perceived as instable tales. This reveals the destruction of society’s values by one individual; they are compelled to confront the brutality, fear, and misuse of power that results.

If you are reading your history book, a play, or even watching the news today, you will see how people abuse the power that they have over somethings. There have been many leaders and people who abuse their power over civilization and places. Even the littlest taste of power often leads them to corruption. Many times, citizens and adversaries riot over some of the things that they disagree on and, in some cases, murder comes in to play.

Tris, the main character of the book Divergent faces many trials as she comes of age and needs to take an aptitude test to help her determine the faction she belongs to in order to guide her choice on Ceremony day. Her test results are inconclusive making her a Divergent, meaning she fits into multiple factions and considered a threat to the faction system. During the Choosing Ceremony, Tris must decide out of the five factions which to join, Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Candor or Amity. Although it means leaving her family, Tris chooses the Dauntless faction and goes through an extremely challenging initiation comprised of three stages to prove her worthiness to join the Dauntless. As Tris passes initiation and becomes a Dauntless, she connects with another Dauntless named Four who uncovers a plan that the Erudite's have to wage war against the

In this quote, Harding mentions that being mentally ill could give them more power over others, while also making reference to Hitler, a man that had a crazy ideology with immense power over Germany in the past.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be living your life in fear? Constantly being wanted, and living on the run and in fear only because you are a divergent? I have read the chapters 1-27 in the book Insurgent, in the beginning Tris and Tobias were on their way away from the city and away from the erudite, who were taking control. After they find out that the erudite are searching for them, they decide to take a train back to the center of the city and stay in the warehouse with a bunch of other divergent.
I think that everyone wants power in someway and everyone goes about getting that power differently. To feel like one has power they might yell, push, hit, or cause someone or something pain is someway, or they might want to boss someone around. Often the desire for power brings out and ugly side in people as we saw in Lord of The Flies. When someone has power over you and uses their power in an ugly way it causes us to have an even bigger hunger for
Power can have the persuasive action in undoing the moral ethics of one’s character. This can be seen throughout history, such as World War II and proven by the actions of Napoleon in the allegory, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. As Lord Acton said “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In history what was viewed as a villain, is never the same as the perception. A leader does not begin wanting to do wrong, they start with the best intentions, but power is a tricky thing.
