In “This is Water” and A Long Walk to Water, both Park and Wallace demonstrate people thinking internally from a personal consciousness. It is clear that Salva and other characters from A Long Walk to Water and the author of “This is Water” think from a personal consciousness because of how they change their minds. Specifically, this is shown through how the woman who was helping Salva she changed her mind and left him and Wallace changing his thinking to be able to include others’ perspectives and how me not being able to make decisions affects others.
Characters in both “This is Water” and A Long Walk to Water demonstrate internal thinking through changing their minds. Throughout both passages, people were faced with many decisions and challenges that required them to think

Park writes, “Salva stared at her as panic rose inside of him. Why can’t I go with her?” (Park 18). The old woman who had previously been helping him, changes her mind for her own benefit and isn’t thinking about what he is going through. This connects to Wallace’s struggle in “This is Water”. He feels that “Other people’s thoughts and feelings have to be communicated to you somehow, but your own are so immediate, urgent, real”(Wallace 2). Wallace is saying that it is easier to only notice and think about one’s own feelings. Later in “This is Water”, Wallace changes his thinking to include others’ possible thoughts and feelings into the way he sees situations that he is put into. The woman in A Long Walk to Water, only knows her own feelings, as they are “immediate, urgent, real” to her and she changes her mind without fully understanding Salva’s perspective and what he is going through. (Wallace 2) His feelings aren’t being communicated through to her. Both of these quotes use diction to show how people think internally. Salva is feeling scared and alone inside but his feelings aren’t being communicated to the woman who was with him. This is shown through

Deep River is a book written by Shusaku Endo. In the book with you can read 4 main stories about seeking to find oh rather said looking to be more spiritual by following the ritual and myths in a way to be in a better spiritual connection. Each character has a very important role because one of them is in search of something that helps them to understand and manage their spirituality and emotions in a way that is comfortable. Something very curious about the book is that each chapter is mentioned with the name case. For each story gave me an idea of how I would develop the story.
When the war started affecting Salva and his village it became apparent to him that he may never see his family again. “If I die now, I will never see my family again.” (11) This thought helped Salva strengthen and have the instinct to survive so he could see his family again, which is one of the reasons he did survive. Not only did he think he would never see his family again, but he became friends with Marial, a boy from the group he was in, who was soon taken away from him as well.
A very important theme in the book A Long Walk to Water is perseverance. The first example that perseverance is an important theme is how Nya walks back and forth to a faraway pond 2 times a day, every day, for seven months a year without stopping. Also, on the path, there are thorns everywhere that are painful to remove. Nya only gets a small bit of water and rest even though it is very hot and dry. Even the water that Nya gets with much pain and suffering is muddy and infected with Guinea Worms.
(pg 73) This shows that Salva is persevering because even though he hates the refugee camp, he
In a novel or book, the setting can have a major effect on the character. It can also play a role in a major conflict of a story. In the book, "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park, the setting, being a desert, takes effect in influencing characters, plot, and mood throughout the story. Firstly, the setting of this novel causes Nya to experience many feelings and emotion such as pain, sorrow, and grief.
It was almost as if they had left their strength with him, to help him on his journey.” Another example is “ So he had to shake the fear of to continue the journey” These examples prove that Salva was determined because he knew that his family would want him to make the trip.
Southern Sudan is an incredibly difficult place to live, with unbearable hot temperatures and lack of water. Many people in Sudan struggle each year just to stay alive. In Linda Sue Park’s novel, A Long Walk to Water, one character that struggles to make a life for herself in Sudan is Nya. Nya is a young Nuer girl living in a poor village with no plumbing or running water. Despite the harsh environment of Southern Sudan, Nya is able to survive due to her hard work and her family working together.
Wallace, David Foster "This is Water" Kenyon College Commencement Speech 2005 In the speech "This is Water" David Foster Wallace attempts to explain how the general populace is self-centered and what a person can do to change the "default setting" within our mind. Wallace's main point is to get his audience to understand and realize that they have a daily choice to make between being inconsiderate and acknowledging those around them. They can either remain conceited and unsympathetic towards others, or they can change and attempt to see and understand the situations of those around them as they go through their daily trials. Wallace uses various examples to explain and expand his argument.
From pages 80 to 82, we learn that the refugee camp it says that ‘Salva made up his mind. He would walk south to Kenya… crowds of other boys followed him. Nobody talked about it, but by the end of the first day Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys.’ This explains how Salva doesn’t panic and think irrationally about situations like the Itang refugee camp closing, and when he decides to walk to Kenya, he follows through and helps three-fourths of the group arrive in Kenya safely. Obviously, Salva’s determination and hard work helps him get through the factors
In the book A Long Walk to Water, the main character Salva must overcome a lot of challenges in order for his survival. He is persistent, a hard worker, and just overall a very lucky young boy. These factors are very big reasons for his survival. After reading the book, readers can see that one of the main factors for Salvas survival is hard work.
In every generation, children can inherit many of their parents' possessions, whether those are physical or emotional possessions. In the short story “A Secret Lost in the Water” by Roch Carrier, a farmer states that “nowadays fathers aren’t able to pass on anything to the next generation.” However, with effort from both sides, parents can pass down many things to their children. This includes possessions such as culture, skills that help shape children's character and beliefs, and language. To begin, parents can pass down their culture to their children.
Sometimes it can be difficult overcoming grueling challenges. The book A Long Walk to Water is written by Linda Sue Park and is a historical nonfiction book about a young boy named Salva. In Sudan there was an awful war that killed many. He was in school when war first struck and he was sent to the bush. After this Salva has faced many challenges fighting to survive.
On The Waterfront directed by Elia Kazan, and written by Budd Schulberg tells a story about a group of labor racketeers in Hoboken, New Jersey. Terry Malloy, one of the main characters, works for the union head and at the end of the movie is faced with a tough decision to either testify in court against his friends and become a so called “rat”, or do the wrong thing and disappoint his lover Edie. Terry portrays himself having a tough exterior, yet he is extremely conflicted and vulnerable on the inside. A common theme throughout this movie are pigeons and I believe they symbolize who Terry Malloy is as a character. Birds are known for being confined in cages and are restricted from spreading their wings to fly.
