All individuals are created equal. This is one of the many ideas the United States is built on. This concept existed long before the Declaration of Independence was written. This idea was introduced by John Locke who was an Enlightenment thinker. The declaration of Independence is where Americans declared their rights. Thomas Jefferson, the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence was greatly influenced by the philosopher John Locke. Locke believed that humans had natural rights, that power comes from the people and all men are equal, and these beliefs can be found in Jefferson’s writings.
Thomas Jefferson’s works and ideas laid the foundation for several key aspects on the limits of the United States government, the idea of separation of church and state, and the importance of personal rights. Jefferson wrote many influential pieces of literature which pushed the concept of having limited government power. Jefferson wanted America not to be like the European monarchies that fell due to religious strife, so he emphasized a secular government. Jefferson, following closely with the ideas of John Locke, stressed the importance of the protection of individual rights against the government.
"Give me liberty or give me death.", Patrick Henry eloquently stated, this was the sentiment that colonists strongly felt during the American Revolution. This is but one of the many influential phrases voiced throughout the war that occurred between American colonists and Great Britain. The American Revolution began once all delegates from the continental congress signed the Declaration of Independence authored by Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia on April 13, 1743. He was the the third eldest out of six children and his parents were wealthy plantation owners. He was married to Martha Skelton who bore six children with him, however only two of them lived more than a few years.("Thomas Jefferson")
A variety of qualified people were chosen to write the Declaration of Independence, but in the end, Thomas Jefferson was appointed. The final draft was supposed to be inspiring through its language to give people hope and freedom. With this in mind, Thomas Jefferson had a lot of pressure being the author of the final draft. A woman, who was his landlady, recorded in her journal about hearing his conflict at the time. She wrote about how she listened to him pacing frantically upstairs, trying to think of what to inscribe. He decided to calm himself, and sent for a messenger to get his violin from his home. After Jefferson obtained his violin, the landlady recorded that she could hear him pace for a little while, and then stopped to play his
On the eve of a modern era, July 4, 1776, a select committee of five representatives sat down to document the separation of the American colonies from the despotic reign of the English Monarch, King George. It was on this day that Thomas Jefferson put pen to paper to write “The Declaration of Independence” and courageously declared autonomy from Great Britain and their harsh and unlawful actions which, the colonists, can no longer be content with. Jefferson proclaims the separation of what will later become the United States of America from Imperialistic Britain. Jefferson addresses King George directly to state his intentions as well as the Patriotic Colonists in order to persuade them in favor of the liberation of colonial America and obtaining
The Age of Reason is a name used to describe the age that influenced the American Statesmen of the Revolution. Taxes forced upon the colonists by Britain after the French and Indian War enraged the colonists, leading to the Revolution that would change the world forever. Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence and Thomas Paine’s The Crisis Number 1 were two very important works of literature during the Revolutionary period. Both works used persuasion effectively. Jefferson wrote to King George III declaring independence; Paine’s purpose was to unite America to fight against Britain. However, The Declaration was most effective because we still use The Declaration of Independence today. The United States would not be the democracy it is today without Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of
American Founding Father, Thomas Jefferson, in his historical document, The Declaration of Independence, presented problems that were occurring in the seventeenth century, in the colonies. Jefferson’s purpose was to convey the idea that Great Britain was oppressing the North American colonies from moving forward, and that the colonists should make a push to break away from Britain and gain independence. He articulates an angered, but yet encouraging tone, in order to appeal to not only Great Britain, but also the emotions of the colonists to get them on board with his plan.

Thomas Jefferson wrote one of the most important and ironic phrases in the United States’s history: “...that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with inherent and inalienable right; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” (652). The Declaration of Independence boasts that it supports that all men have a right to liberty. However, even though they declare it, it does not always hold truthful. The declaration only promotes the freedom and separation as a united country or for the men of the occupied countries. There is no reference to women, people of color, or children in regards to liberty. Meaning, that unless you are a man, technically you are still under England’s rule. I know that the document is not directly saying that and most people would assume that “men” was an all inclusive term. And yet, if that were true, we would have the same wage gap between men and women or the battle for the same civil rights that the men in 1776 were fighting for in 2016. But I digress.

“Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.” He should believe so, as Thomas Jefferson’s actions clearly characterize his individual self, while also inducing the question, Does Thomas Jefferson deserve the honor he possesses, through these eminent actions? Many people believe that Thomas Jefferson is a powerful individual who helped form our country, and was a great leader through his presidential career. He made the best out of difficult situations, when he knew the complete situation had to remain unsolved, and he also wrote the Declaration of Independence for the help of our country. On the other hand, it can also be debated that Thomas Jefferson is a hypocritic man that nearly destroyed our military,
The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. The purpose of the declaration was to separate the colonies from Great Britain and to give reason for this severance. The preamble gives the reasons why they must separate themselves and why they cannot tolerate a foreign ruler. Jefferson wrote his first draft of the declaration, and when he showed it to Congress there was an intensive revision process totaling 86 changes, these changes must have been made extremely precisely when you think of the severity of this text. The motive was made because the colonies believed their natural rights were being violated, they claimed that “All men are created equal,” and that their rulers weren’t following that basic principle. Jefferson was assisted by a committee that was appointed by the Continental Congress that consisted of
While the Declaration of Independence was written with the intent to convey to Britain that the thirteen colonies were independent states and no longer under their rule, it actually declares that men are equal, and thus have certain rights that cannot be denied to them. Through the list of grievances, Thomas Jefferson exemplifies the colonist’s inborn rights that were denied by the King. Jefferson constantly states how the British government unfairly ruled them with limited representation and would constantly impose actions without their consent, such as when he quartered troops in their homes and cut of their economic activities. Jefferson believed that a Government should support its people and head to its wants and needs in order to become prosperous, rather than being tyrannical and limiting their expansion, both geographically
