Sometimes oxygen deprivation or other injuries occur during the birthing process and subsequently causes intellectual disabilities.
• Problems after birth – sometimes childhood diseases can damage the brain causing characteristics of intellectual disabilities. Further, injuries like a head injury or near drowning can cause a child to develop intellectual disability symptoms.
What Are the Causes of Intellectual Disability? Intellectual disability can be caused by any condition that impairs development of the brain before birth, during birth or in the childhood years. Several hundred causes have been discovered, but in about one-third of the people affected, the cause remains unknown. The three major known causes of intellectual disability are Down syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and Fragile X syndrome. The causes can be categorized as follows: • Genetic conditions - These result from abnormalities of genes inherited from parents, errors when genes combine, or from other disorders of the genes caused during pregnancy by infections, overexposure to x-rays and other factors. There are many genetic diseases associated with intellectual disability. Some examples include

Many brain injuries are preventable. Children should always ride in an approved child safety seat. The seat must be installed and used correctly. Follow the manufacturer 's instructions for installation and use. If a family cannot afford a safety seat, there are agencies that can provide them. Ask your healthcare provider for information. Children should always wear helmets when riding bikes, skateboards, etc.
Brain injury also occurs when infants are shaken or dropped. This unfortunate situation often occurs when caregivers are frustrated. Caring for infants can be extremely stressful. It is natural to feel frustrated. Ask your healthcare provider to refer you to someone who can teach you better ways to cope stress.
There are many genetic causes of intellectual disability. The two most common are Down syndrome and fragile X syndrome. Genetic causes of intellectual disability cannot be considered preventable.
Lastly, certain psychiatric conditions are associated with intellectual disabilities. The most common disorder is called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Like genetic abnormalities, there is no known way to predict or prevent
In the case of Moore v. Texas, “the Supreme Court will face the question of whether it is a violation of the Eighth Amendment to use outdated medical standards in assessing intellectual disabilities to determine whether an individual may be executed.” This really stood out to me, to think that he committed the act of a murder in 1980, when he took the life of a grocery store clerk and they are questioning if he should face the consequences that he was given. In my opinion if you chose to take the life of any individual you must pay for your actions, I feel that many people use “intellectual disability” as a way to avoid being put to death. I do agree many people have mental sickness such as “schizophrenia, bipolar disorders etc” but if you

Closed head injuries are the main leading causes of death in children under 4 years old and the most common cause of physical disability and cognitive impairment in young people. Closed head injuries and other forms of mild traumatic brain injury are about 75% of the estimated 1.7 million brain injuries that occur annually in the United States. Closed head injuries may result in physical, cognitive, or psychological impairment. Closed-head injuries are caused mostly by car accidents, falls, acts of violence, and sports injuries. Closed-head injuries can be from mild injuries to traumatic brain injuries and can lead to severe brain damage or death.

.1 Multiple conditions and/or disabilities could include a combination of factors relating to: • Sensory loss after a stroke may have lost some senses such as touch, speech or even in severe cases the sense of swallowing. • Physical health- They may have arthritis which could then not help with their physical health leading to not being able to move around causing depression. • Mental health-
The largest advocacy group for the intellectually disabled, the Association for Retarded Citzens,is now simply ARC (Fairman). The term mental retardation is being replaced with intellectual disability by The Center for Disease Control and Prevention because this word has become so taboo. People have managed to turn innocent words into hateful speech so much so that professional establishments and groups will no longer use those words because they are deemed as a negative term. Even if someone disagrees with Fairman’s argument about not banning certain words, his paper and his assumptions are acceptable because people have heard for themselves just how these words are being used
It has been demonstrated that the possibility of a child being born with Down syndrome increases as the age of the mother increases, and clearly women have delayed their maternity especially

For example, I've broken my arm multiple times getting thrown off my horse and I always wear my helmet! When I get thrown off i'm normally left with migraines and headaches after getting thrown. Accidents obviously still happen with or without a helmet. Growing up Laura Crum was in a team roping family, her best friend was to. She had been at a team roping when a major accident had happened.

A life of severe disability, is not a life worth living. Therefore, an infant born with a severe physical or cognitive impairment should not be allowed to live. Or any person for that matter, regardless of age who suffers from a severe cognitive disability should be lawfully killed. At least that is a belief held by a certain professor at Princeton University. Harriet McBryde Johnson, a disability advocate and lawyer had the opportunity to debate these beliefs with Professor Peter Singer.
Part C - Disability affects development and learning because disability affects children's development in different ways. That can be physically and sensory, social, emotional and behavioural and learning or cognitive. So say a child with Hearing impairment affects language and communication in that they may struggle to understand words in a book and get stressed at trying to read aloud.

To support this, “No amount of protection can stop the sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head that comes with blocking and attacking, which can cause the brain to slosh around inside the skull like yolk inside a vigorously shaken eggshell.” (Source #2). The evidence proves that no amount of protection can stop the head. Moreover, “No helmet can protect concussions entirely, says Rowson.” Source #1).
The reason for this is because the cause can be very difficult to determine. For socially constructed disabilities, it is important to determine if the cause is actually a disability or if the child is does not fit into the expected norms of society. In other words, is this a true disability or is it considered a disability due to social norms and standards. Furthermore, do these social constructs cause the exclusion of students from general education classroom or other situation that students would normally be allowed to participate?
