Elearning industry developed it’s roots from distance education, and distance education had it’s roots in teaching correspondence courses through the mail. One of the first lesson to have been taught through the mail was a course on how to teach shorthand to teach anyone who had to take notes quickly to write faster. What is SCORM - when elearning first came out their was a wide variety of files and standards that emerged. This had a horrible effect since what worked in one e authoring program didn 't work on another. This made the integration and creation of elearning materials very costly partly due to a elearning content developer having to publish and write in several different formats. SCORM was used to standardise the elearning authoring and publication method. This greatly reduced the cost of content creation due to the fact that only one file had to be published and created.
