KEY COMPONENTS OF THE TRAVEL AND TOURISM INDUSTRY (P1)

1. INTRODUCTION: There are many types of tourist but generally they are broken down into three categories; leisure, business and VFR (visiting friends and relatives). Another way in which tourists are categorised is by where they originate from. This gives us another three types of tourist; domestic, inbound and outbound.

2. TYPES OF TOURISM: domestic, inbound, and outbound.
2.1 DOMESTIC TOURISM: This relates to people who are travelling, with at least one overnight stay, within their own country for tourism purposes. Examples would be a couple from Belfast on a weekend break in Fermanagh or a family from Portrush coming to Belfast for an overnight stay to go a concert in the SSE …show more content…

Examples would be a family from Northern Ireland travelling to France or an English couple visiting the USA. These visitors would be inbound tourists to France and the USA.
3.0 TRAVEL AND TOURISM COMPONENT INDUSTRIES: There are many parts to the travel and tourism industry and in order for the industry to operate effectively, they must work together and rely on each other. 3.1 ACCOMMODATION: The main types of accommodation on offer to visitors are serviced accommodation where meals and cleaning is available and non-serviced accommodation where guests look after their own cleaning and cooking. The main types of serviced accommodation used by tourists are hotels, B&Bs, guest houses and farmhouses. Hotels are usually the most expensive of the three, with a wider range of facilities than B&Bs or guest houses. However, the B&Bs, guest houses and farmhouses can often be more personal and ‘cosy’.

Many tourists prefer this option. It can often be cheaper than serviced accommodation and it means that they can eat out in local restaurants and they are able to come and go more freely. For example, a family from London enjoying a weeklong stay in a self-catering cottage in The Lake District or a group of teenagers from Belfast could camp at Benone Tourist Complex near Limavady.
3.2 TRANSPORT PROVISION: Transport is an essential part of the tourism industry. It allows tourists to get to their chosen destination and then, when they arrive they need transport to get around and explore the area. Sometimes transport can be part of the actual experience itself e.g. a Cruise Ship or a Horse Drawn Caravan.
The main types of transport used by tourists are road, rail, sea and air. Road travel can be by private car, hired car or coach. In the UK car ownership is very high and the private car dominates road travel. Most domestic holidays and day trips in the UK are taken by private car. The car hire sector is also very strong as many tourists like to hire a car on holiday to get around.
