Every director utilize cinematic techniques to create and add mood and tone to their films. Tim Burton is known for making gothic and fantasy films with various techniques. His imaginations and experiences led to the creativeness of his art. Many individuals would instantly distinguish a film directed by Burton just by pointing out the characteristics of the movie. The use of editing, lighting, and music are very common in his films to achieve a desired effect, which will be explored more thoroughly throughout this essay.
The use of editing is very common in Tim Burton films, especially flashbacks. In the movie, “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory,” it is frequent to discern flashbacks of Willy Wonka’s past. Scenes were displayed to express and explain Wonka’s feelings and why the factory exists. In the flashbacks, it shows that Wonka’s father was a dentist, and the young Willy Wonka’s …show more content…

Tim Burton is very well known for making gothic and fantasy films. Just by distinguishing the darkness and/or fantasy of a movie, individuals can often presume a movie is directed by Tim Burton. To point out, Charlie’s home in “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory” is filled with dim light. The entire house creates a non threatening and welcoming environment. It’s as if their home could describe them. Another example is that in “Edward Scissorhands,” it shows the darkness in Edward’s castle, thus generating a mysterious effect. The scene when Peg entered into the castle uses a dark lighting caused her to shiver and be curious as she further discover the abandoned castle. This also allowed the viewers to receive the same effect. In “Big Fish,” Edward Bloom takes a path through the dark forest, hoping for a shortcut. The darkness also creates a mysterious effect and provides the character to be inquisitive as to where the path would lead him to.
