Everyone has different traits. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird the father in the story has some very admirable qualities. Atticus, an almost 50 year old man when the story begins, is a lawyer and a single dad. Lawyers are very often viewed negatively in today's culture; Atticus is an exception. In this story, there are many people with many admirable traits, but Atticus is the most humble and respectful person of all. Atticus is humble, respectful, and is a good problem-solver. There are a very few people who cover up their accomplishments, but Atticus is one of these people. When Atticus was young, he was the deadest shot in all of Maycomb county. To most other people this would be something to brag about for a long time, but Scout and Jem don't even find out about it until Atticus has to shoot a mad dog. When Atticus and Mr. Heck Tate were debating who should take the shot at the dog, Mr. Tate said, “...look where he is! Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley house! I can't shoot that well and you know it!” (96). Atticus has a great talent, but he chooses to not use it till he has to. Atticus does not take pride in this talent, because it is something he did not accomplish himself, it was given to him. …show more content…
There is no time in the book where he is disrespectful to anyone. When many people, including his sister, are saying awful things about him because he is representing Tom Robinson, he pays no regard to them. Often times, lawyers are harsh on witnesses who are on the stand, they are sometimes even quite mean. Atticus is not like this, he pays equal respect to everyone in the courtroom. Miss Maudie Atkinson said, “He's the same in the courtroom as he is on the public streets” (199). This respect he gives to everyone is the main reason so many people look up to and respect
Atticus is a nice and outgoing person who is trying to make a change in the town. He is a middle-aged man who lives in the suburbs. Who is also one of the finest lawyers in towns and is good at what he does. “Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.” … (Lee 90)
it’s something you wouldn’t understand. Atticus is real old, but I wouldn’t care it he couldn’t do anything—I wouldn’t care if he couldn’t do a blessed thing . . . Atticus is a gentleman, just like me!’” (130-131). Although Scout wants to brag to the whole town about Atticus’s skill in shooting, Jem realizes that since Atticus had not told them before, and tries not to bring the subject up, he probably had not wanted them to know about it.
There are many strong and well-developed characters in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. There’s the emotional, mental, and physical maturity of Scout Finch, the growing up of her brother Jem, and the change of ideas about Boo Radley. One of the most important characters of the novel is Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus. He goes through a lot in the book, and we, as readers, get the insight of his parenting and mentality. He has an extremely crucial role in the book, and his impact on the course of the story is an memorable one.
A Well Respected Man Atticus is a well respected man throughout the town of Maycomb. Although criticized openly he still continued to do the right thing for others People admired him for so many reasons. Three reasons he was an admirable person was one he was compassionate to others, he was caring, and finally he was brave. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” Atticus is well respected.
The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, has characters like Atticus and Tom who are courageous, brave, and kindhearted character. Being a Mockingbird requires the personality of one, such as being innocent, kindhearted, and have a strong will. The mockingbird in the story don't want to hurt anyone but believe in justice. Atticus and Tom have the personality to be the mockingbirds of this story. Atticus is the father of Jennifer and Scout, he is a lawyer that's is defending Tom Robinson in the upcoming, case who was given to Atticus by the judge.
Atticus was a great man. He was kind, caring, respectful, well thought of, level headed, and anything and everything that a good lawyer and father should be. He is one too just wants what 's right, which is why he did his best to defend Tom, when the case shouldn 't have been given to him but a low man who just finished the bar Judge taylor gave him the case because he knew he would give it his all to bring out the truth. He also sees everyone as equals and does not believe that the whites are any better than the blacks. Attics makes points toward the jury that in any other place or time would have been ruled in Toms being not guilty but because of the segregation in the deep south of maycomb the jury had their mind made up before tom even
Furthermore, as previously mentioned, Atticus treats everyone equally and with respect; even Mrs. Dubose, who ridicules him for taking the Tom Robinson
He shows human courage, which gives us the idea that Atticus is a common and inconspicuous man he is represented from the eyes of the children, who are getting some heat from all his actions. There is an idea in the novel that children have a sense of justice and become prejudice only under the influence of others. This idea comes from a lawyer Atticus, a man of honor, who is doing good although he isn’t expected to. His arguments for heroism are “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It 's when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what”(Lee 115).
Details often help describe a character's personality and beliefs. The details in To Kill a Mockingbird describe Atticus and his many heroic traits. Ms.Dubose, a neighbor, is always rude to Jem, Scout and Atticus. Although she is vicious and evil, Atticus is always polite and courteous to her, Scout decides, “It was times like these that I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived” (Lee 115-116). Atticus is a hero because he, unlike his children, faces Ms.Dubose.
He is a true gentleman who has an exceptional sense of justice and a positive reputation among the citizens of Maycomb. There is a section of chapter 10 that validates everything said about Atticus’ character thus far. “When he gave us our air-rifles Atticus wouldn’t teach us to shoot. Uncle Jack instructed in the rudiments thereof; he said Atticus wasn’t interested in guns. Atticus said to Jem one day, ‘I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds.
It is crucially important to realize that Atticus did not tell his children about him being known as the best shot in town because this shows how humble he really is. Although Atticus does not directly talk to his children about humility; readers are able to understand how important this quality is to him. When Scout finds out about this, she wants to tell everybody, but Jem said on page 130, “I reckon if he 'd wanted us to know it, he’da told us. If he was proud of it, he’da told us.” Jem realized that his father was so humble and not prideful, and he went on to say that he was a gentleman just like Atticus.
Atticus allows each of his children to be their unique self. For instance, Scout is a young girl who during that time would be expected to wear a dress. Scout is not the typical girl because she prefers to wear overalls instead of a dress. Atticus treats Scout and Jem as adults. Scout and Jem do not call their father “Dad’’, they call him by his first name “Atticus”.
He stands up for what he believes in even if that means ruining himself or possibly putting those around him into danger. Atticus Finch is a very determined, earnest, and ambitious
Atticus’ like everyone has weaknesses. Although, his weaknesses easily are outshined by his strengths. One of his strong suits is the
Atticus Prides himself on justice and freedom and he also sees the best in everyone and sees potential in people and he doesn’t like to brag. We can see that Atticus prides himself on this because he never tells his children about his skill in shooting. Atticus also shows he sees the good in people because he believes that Bob Ewell still has some good in him. Bob Ewell shows his pride through oppression and racism. We can see this when Bob instills fear into his daughter through fear and violence and Bob shows how proud he is about racism because of the way he talks and acts around African
