Although it has been considered a classic literature by several readers, the novel still remains in the top list of the banned books. The novel’s profanity, racial content, and its references to rape have provoked many readers to challenge the novel and lead to its removal from school classrooms and libraries. Many readers have disagreed to letting the novel be used in the classroom due to its vulgar language that is evident throughout the book. Expressions such as ‘nigger’ and ‘damn’ are used repeatedly which most find extremely offensive especially to young readers. The fact that the characters in the book are children and are the ones using the profane phrases has left many questioning the novel and not wanting their children to find such expressions as acceptable (Why Was it
In addition, people celebrate Banned Books Week in libraries or special events. Some books are banned in schools and libraries because they contain uncomfortable topics or offensive language; however, some people believe banned books are worth reading because they incorporate life lessons that students can learn from. First, To Kill A Mockingbird has been banned numerous times in different school systems. In 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2016, it has been banned by parents due to the the uncomfortable use of the “N-word” or the books racism (Devoe). In To Kill A Mockingbird, it says, “He choked you, he hit you, then he raped you, that right”(Lee 190)?
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird shows the great deal of racism and prejudice in the earlier years of America. Throughout the book there are many examples of this. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, the symbols Boo Radley, Calpurnia, and the colored balcony help to develop the important theme of Prejudice and Racism. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Boo Radley is known as one of the least favored characters in Maycomb. The people of Maycomb are extremely prejudice against him even though he never leaves the house.
Although taken to the extreme, the movie speaks on real-world issues. Being in a color-blind relationship while the outside world is color sensitive, or aware, is all too common in mixed race relationships. Speaking on real-world issues can be scary, and even uncomfortable. The movie received a lot of backlash from white, liberal Americans because it spoke on the real-world issues while targeting them. The theme of the movie so elegantly displays three different tensions; horror, mystery and, race, in that it displays the three tensions that African American’s face.

Many people think it should be banned for its language and storyline, which in fact does not make sense at all because those themes exist in real life as well, and we can’t erase them from history. It has many important values imbedded in the story for us to learn, as well as a lot to teach us about our history. This 1960’s novel is a classic with what was a controversial plot at the time. Discrimination is the one of the, if not the biggest themes portrayed in the novel To kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. As we already know the biggest form of discrimination in the novel is racism. However, there are many forms of other discrimination such as Jem being put down for being who she loves to be, a classic Tomboy. Another example would be Boo Radley being hated by almost every citizen in Maycomb for no reason at all, none of these mean citizens even know Boo personally. There is however some good to this evil. Atticus and others were different from the norm and stood up for people.
This included segregated schools, unfair treatment, and even separate water fountains for “white” and “colored” people. However, people today are starting to turn innocent words and statements, including the words “white” or “black,” into so-called “racist” slurs and phrases. As this idea grows that simple gestures and words are racist, it becomes a larger problem for everyone, not just targets or victims of true racism. In today’s world, people are starting to spread incorrect facts online to make things seem racist. For instance, in the article “7 Statistics That Will Change How You View Racism,” the writer chooses to state that “Juries are prone to racist sentencing,” (Simon).
Hate speech is speech that offends, threatens, or insults groups, based on race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability. Hate speech could disrupt the learning process and create an environment where students feel afraid, be unable to speak up, or feel as if their thoughts and ideas are not as equally as value. Traditionally free speech can be very offensive no matter how terrible the words might be. Many colleges throughout the nation have adopted some sort of hate speech ban which is a violation of the first amendment, but it is very needed. For example, lets

When the term sexist comes up it is usually happens between two genders and commonly has to do with one not being able to do the others job, not having the strength of the other, or not having the intelligence of the other person. This all goes along with disrespectful comments as well, but these types of comments are often made between students and youth.these reasons thus prove that many people use the freedom of speech to get away with saying many hurtful things. Another right that falls under the category of overuse is the right to protest. In our modern day America it has become a typical thing for people to regularly protest. Lately this has been happening over police affairs.
