“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow,” said Mary Anne Radmacher. Mary Anne Radmacher is an author with inspiring writing and thoughtful motivations. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird there is an abundance of courage shown. Jem learns about courage from Atticus, Boo Radley, and Scout. The old and wise Atticus shows the kids responsibility and courage. “I wanted you to see what real courage is instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what,” Atticus (Lee 112). When Atticus defended Tom Robinson he knew Tom would be proven guilty …show more content…
Boo was locked inside his house for over fifteen years. He is not a very social person so for him to come outside for any reason is a big deal. “Well how´d you feel if you´d been shut up for a hundred years with nothin´ but cats to eat,” said Dill (Lee 47). This quote shows that Boo Radley is not social at all and the kids think that he is weird. As curious as Jem and Scout are one day when they were walking home from school they noticed something shiny in a tree so they went to check it out. Someone kept leaving them gifts in there. They eventually found out that Boo Radley was giving them these things. He was afraid to leave his house yet he still gave them gifts for no reason. “Minutes later it seemed I was awakened by someone shaking me. Atticus’s overcoat was spread across me. Is it morning already,” said Scout (Lee 68). When there was a fire at Miss Maudie’s house Atticus had the kids go stand at the end of the street which happened to be by the Radley house. Boo was watching the kids and saw that Scout was cold so he came out of his house to put a blanket around her. Even if he doesn’t know that the kids are a little scared of him he still is afraid to come outside, and to help out a random stranger at your cost takes great courage. “Because nobody could see them at night, because Atticus would be so deep in a book he wouldn’t hear the Kingdom coming, because if Boo Radley killed them they’d miss …show more content…
Scout is very much like her father. “I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks,” said Scout (Lee 227). Scout has her own opinions, she doesn’t care what the person looks like or who they are she decides on her own if she likes them or not. In the 1930s it is very hard to have your own opinions because of all the racism and judgment. Scout is a nine year old girl who is standing strong believing in what she wants and that is courageous. “A nigger-lover. I ain’t very sure what it means, but the way Francis said it--I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say somethin’ about Atticus, said Scout (Lee 86). Scout was defending her dad. He is a grown man and defend himself but she has enough courage to defend him too. “Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing,” said Scout (Lee 23). Scout is so inspiring. She is so smart for a nine year old. She has so much courage for standing up to talk to her
The True Meaning of Courage Hall of Fame basketball coach Tony Dungy once said, "Courage is the ability to do the right thing, all the time, no matter how painful or uncomfortable it might be.". In other words, to be courageous is to choose your actions based on morality, even if your decision may have negative consequences. The novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee features two characters; Atticus Finch and Boo Radley, who are examples of Dungy's quote. Both characters use courage to do righteous deeds, even though harsh outcomes are bound to happen.
Boo Radley is a very quiet man who got into trouble with the law at a young age and has stayed inside his house since. Around town, he is seen as a bad man who is very weird for staying inside his house, and rumors about him are everywhere. Scout and Jem hear about this and are very interested about this, so they go and mess around at his house. Even with all these people thinking he is a weird, crazy person, Boo Radley is still a great person. When there was a fire, the kids were outside when it was cold, and Boo Radley was nice enough to wrap a blanket around Scout.
Aside from learning about her fellow citizens of Maycomb, Scout also had to start to protect herself, and her father from their neighbors and classmates. The atmosphere of discrimination towards the black defendant, and hatred towards their father, caused many uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous situations for the Finch Family. When Scout is confronted by her uncle Jack about a fight between Herself and her classmate, Scout responds “-tell you one thing right now, Uncle Jack, I’ll be-- I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say something about Atticus.” (114) This quote explains how she had to protect her father, and she could not just stand around and let him say malicious things about Atticus. Those actions were very brave of Scout, but she did not stop there.
Atticus, however, did what he knew was right and defended Tom with passion. Atticus’s choice to defend Tom was heroic, but had major consequences for his kids. Amongst other things, such as almost getting Jem and Scout killed and letting them run free without
Abigail Poore 1st period 10/29/15 There are many examples of courage in To Kill a Mockingbird. Courage means having the confidence to do something. The three main characters that show courage are Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Jem Finch. All the characters show courage, just in different ways. First, Atticus shows courage by defending a black, and no one in the town agrees with his decision.
People that show courage in hard times know what could happen to them yet they act upon it to win a battle. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, many characters show true courage when they are under pressure or should not as they know something bad will happen to them. Mrs. Dubose, Atticus Finch, and Jem Finch all show courage and perseverance even though they know that something bad will happen to
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee wants to show courage in her characters in the story. Atticus (the father) wants to show his son Jem what courage is. He states in page 149 line 8-10 “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand”. There are multiple ways courage is expressed in this novel. Atticus tries to show his children to not be “common” as he explained it to Scout.
Jem further understood the true meaning of moral courage when he saw Atticus defending Tom Robinson, a black man. Although Atticus was hugely outnumbered and even cornered by Mr Cunningham and some other people, he did not back down from them. Instead, he seemed even more determined to win the case and prove Tom Robinson 's innocence to all of Maycomb County. Almost everyone in Maycomb County had criticised Atticus and his children for taking up the case of defending Tom Robinson and they were even called "nigger lovers" by many. At first, Jem did not understand why his father chose to defend Tom Robinson when he knew that people would whisper and gossip about it and that the possibility of him winning the case was very low.
Before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience,” said Atticus. (Lee 105). Being proud of yourself and having your own believes and standing strong with them will make you courageous. Atticus teaches Scout about courage here by telling her you can be courageous in many ways. Atticus knows he isn’t going to win the trail, but he is courage and fights for Tom Robinson with a lot
Throughout the novel, the children befriend Boo Radley, since he is a shut in and many children of the neighborhood are quite curious as to what he does inside all of the time. Boo and Scout came specifically close, him giving her a blanket when Maudie Atkinson’s house burned down and at the climax point when he makes his initial known physical appearance as he saves Scout and Jem when Bob Ewell attacks them. After the Tom Robinson trial, Jem and Scout are finally starting to see from his perspective as Jem says “Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time... it's because he wants to stay inside.
Atticus shows determination by fighting for an African American while being discouraged by the white citizens of his town. When Scout asks Atticus why he’s defending Tom even though people of the town had started talking bad about it , he says “‘Scout, you aren’t old enough to understand somethings yet, but there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man. … the main [reason] is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town.’”
Harper Lee wants to tell us that it takes courage NOT to kill a mockingbird Courage and the symbol of the mockingbird are two of the most important, or in fact in my opinion the most important themes, which are addressed and displayed in the highly praised, but also controversial novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee. I will try to interpret these two motives and show how they are strongly connected to each other. There are many different types of courage and many people who all show it in their own personal way. If people talk about bravery and courage, they mostly think of the physical kind of courage. But there are also other kinds, which are often forgotten or cast aside by their big brother: moral and emotional courage.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
In Harper Lee's story, the character Scout is faced with a lot of situations where she feels uncomfortable and doesn't understand what is happening. This is apparent when she confronts the men outside the jail and does not understand why the people are calling Tom Robinson racial slurs. She shows a lot of emotional courage in this situation because she was put on the spotlight and stayed calm. As a result, she helped her father keep Tom Robinson save and made the men leave.
"Courage is when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee 's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. "Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus fits into this definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it several times throughout the novel. "The only thing we 've got is a black man 's word against the Ewells '.
