Jem learns about courage from Atticus, Boo Radley, and Scout. The old and wise Atticus shows the kids responsibility and courage. “I wanted you to see what real courage is instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. Boo was locked inside his house for over fifteen years. He is not a very social person so for him to come outside for any reason is a big deal. “Well how´d you feel if you´d been shut up for a hundred years with nothin´ but cats to eat,” said Dill (Lee 47). This quote shows that Boo Radley is not social at all and the kids think that he is weird. As curious as Jem and Scout are one day when they were walking home from school they noticed something shiny in a tree so they went to check it out. Someone kept leaving them gifts in there. They eventually found out that Boo Radley was giving them these things. He was afraid to leave his house yet he still gave them gifts for no reason. “Minutes later it seemed I was awakened by someone shaking me. Atticus’s overcoat was spread across me. Is it morning already,” said Scout (Lee 68). When there was a fire at Miss Maudie’s house Atticus had the kids go stand at the end of the street which happened to be by the Radley house. Boo was watching the kids and saw that Scout was cold so he came out of his house to put a blanket around her. Scout is very much like her father. “I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks,” said Scout (Lee 227). Scout has her own opinions, she doesn’t care what the person looks like or who they are she decides on her own if she likes them or not. In the 1930s it is very hard to have your own opinions because of all the racism and judgment. Scout is a nine year old girl who is standing strong believing in what she wants and that is courageous. “A nigger-lover. I ain’t very sure what it means, but the way Francis said it--I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say somethin’ about Atticus, said Scout (Lee 86). Scout was defending her dad. He is a grown man and defend himself but she has enough courage to defend him too. “Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing,” said Scout (Lee 23).
