Journal #4 I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 304. This book is about a girl named Scout that lives with her brother Jem, her friend Dill, her father Atticus, and her housekeeper Calpurnia. She has many adventures with the boys and learned many great lessons from Atticus. In particular, there is the case of Tom Robinson in which Atticus defends him. The kids observe the trial in the balcony with the colored people. In this journal I will be evaluating and questioning. G- Why do the people in the balcony stand when Atticus passes Y- 1 answer is that they respect him trying to defend a Negro R- it is hard for a Negro to win R- that racism is involved a lot Y- 2 answer is that they were grateful even …show more content…
She wanted a chance to tempt a Negro man, but in the society that she lives in it is frowned upon that Blacks and Whites together. This is a reason that she would be dishonest is in the courthouse. She knows that it socially acceptable but she did it anyway because she was lonely and deprived of friends her age. At the same time she knows this and that was what intrigued her. She want to hug and kiss a grown man so she thought it might as well be a Negro. As of now she does want to admit it herself or the people in the courthouse. Mayella could have lied because if she confessed the truth her father could abuse her for doing it. She lies because her father did not show her the affection that a father should so this lead down a dangerous path. Mayella does do not want to be beaten or abused again so she untruthful towards anyone that hears this story from her. There also could have be a circumstance in which her father told her what to say so that her testimony sounds like her fathers and not like Tom’s. So she pleases her father so that he does not beat or abuse her
In society, people would usually associate with others who are the most similar to them since they tend to feel more comfortable around them. For instance, in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, is a story of Mayella Ewell who is a poor, white woman living in a racist environment during the 1930s. Some people will say that Mayella isn’t sincerely powerful and others might disagree. On the contrary, Mayella doesn’t have much capability when it comes down to her low financial status and her gender; however, her race is what makes her highly powerful. Mayella lives in a tremendously poor neighborhood since she “lived behind the town garbage dump”.
The twin Moons Glowed red this night, rain pored down in crimson hues, denotements of a deplorable omen on this planet. A single Mandalorian scout was running from a pack of shistavanen as they were stalking about the wet lands laughing, "Run…” growled one of the wolf like men. “Run all you optate meat, we can do this all night." Yelled another, “scum, they verbalize.” Raising his left hand up to his helmet “scum… me” he tapped several buttons into a transceiver built in the armor piece.
Scout fell asleep and missed her entrance. She ran on stage at the end, and this caused many others to burst out laughing. The woman accused Scout of this thing. Scout was ashamed and went back home as the last one.

“ You can kill as many blue jays and robins as your heart desires, but don`t kill a Mockingbird, that is a sin.” - Atticus Finch Pg(93) Through the works of Harper Lee in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, we are introduced to the question, it it worth taking a stand for yourself, and for others. The book “To Kill A Mockingbird” deals with a post reconstruction era in the south, and the effects of racism in the court system, with the main protagonist Scout dealing with the effect of the town lawyer and her father, Atticus dealing with this racism when he is asked to defend an African American man for raping a white woman. Through the actions of Mrs. Dubose, Judge Taylor, Tom Robinson, and Atticus the town lawyer , it is demonstrated that it is worth taking a stand for oneself, and for others as well. It is worth taking a stand for yourself, in fact, it goes against the golden rule which states that doing not doing bad to others is what you should do, because you are giving yourself the hard time, when you know that you have a chance of stopping it, which makes you a bad person.
When on the stand, she attempts to hide her blackness by not admitting she cannot read or write. This action demonstrated that Dicey is ashamed of her
White symbolizes purity and innocence while black has more negative connotations such as evil. It is ironic that a white lie is meant to be harmless and innocent however she was punished for it and she had to be cleansed of it. How do you cleanse something that is already the ultimate example of purity and cleanliness? Her lie should have been black if it needed to be cleansed but this goes to show that although it is believed a white lie is harmless, it can actually be dangerous.
In Mayella trial it had become evident that Mayella was sexually, verbally, and physically abused by her father. During the trial he tried to intimidate her by leaning forward while she was going to tell the truth to Atticus about her father and how he treats her. (DOC B) “Do you love your father Miss Mayella? “He does Tollable, ‘Cept when-“the reason why Mayella stop was when she saw him lean closer in his chair in an attempt to threatened into lying. (DOC B) “Except when” “Except when nothing” said Mayella “I said he does tollable” When Mayella had said this she had sat back again.
Reference Explanation The Title To Kill A Mockingbird It is not immediately obvious as to what this means. The birds themselves are not harmful and only eat insects and berries. Charles Darwin used them in his research to prove the idea of evolution ‘When he was nearly thirteen my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow’ p.3 Foreshadowing. The incident in which Jem breaks his arm is obviously going to be important to the novel because it is mentioned here at the very beginning.
The people would just blow it off as well because a white man would never do that in the 1930’s. Mayella had to accuse some so she accused black person knowing that something would blow up with that. The society also made Victoria an accuser because she too wanted attention. Victoria was very poor and she needed money. So, she accused the boys of raping her.

Novel Response Reading 1. Explain a character's problem and then offer your character advice on how to solve his/her problem. Mayella Ewell has a big problem, to say the least. She’s abused by her drunken hate-filled father, lonely and unhappy. Although her shameful indictment of Tom Robinson is unacceptable, she also is a victim of abuse, and she still needs help.
