The Tom Robinson trial that occurred during the summer of this year was a result of an accusation of rape against Robinson by the Ewell family. According to Sheriff Heck Tate’s testimony, he was called to the Ewell residence on the night of November 21st. He found Miss Mayella Ewell beaten up and sprawled on the ground. “Found her lying on the floor in the middle of the front room, one on the right as you go in”(190). After questioning by Robinson’s lawyer, Atticus Finch, he stated that despite Miss Ewell’s injuries, a doctor had not been called. “‘Did you call a doctor, Sheriff? Did anybody call a doctor?’ asked Atticus. ‘No sir,’ said Mr. Tate”(190). Next, was Bob Ewell’s testimony, which besides the information Tate had already presented, he also stated he saw the suspect to be Robinson. “Mr. Ewell’s face grew scarlet. He stood up and pointed his finger at Tom Robinson”(196). Following Ewell was his daughter. Mrs. Mayella Ewell’s testimony relayed the above information along with the details of the crime. However, when Finch questioned Ewell, Finch began to find uncertainties in Ewell’s account. “‘Do you remember him beating you about the face?’ ‘No, I don’t recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me.’ ‘Was that last …show more content…
According to Robinson, he had often entered the Ewell’s fence for some task given by Miss Ewell. “She’d call me in, suh. Seemed like every time I passed by yonder she’d have some little somethin’ for me to do—choppin’ kindlin’, totin’ water for her”(218). He denied all of the accusations given by the prosecution. Robinson claimed that he was invited into the house, when Miss Ewell hugged and kissed him. Shortly after, Mr. Ewell arrived and yelled something before Robinson took off and ran away. “I didn’t wanta harm her, Mr. Finch, an’ I say lemme pass, but just when I say it Mr. Ewell yonder hollered through th’ window… Mr. Finch, I was runnin’ so fast I didn’t know what

In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words.
Titus Smith Mrs. Lawson English 10 11 January 2023 Who is to blame? Mayella Ewell had no evidence to prove Tom was guilty, but on Tom's side, there was specific evidence that proves he is innocent. The story of, ¨To Kill a Mocking Bird¨ by Harper Lee, is about a little girl living through the experiences of a court case between a local family daughter Mayella Ewell, and a black man Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was accused by Mayella of rape when he came to the Ewell house to help her. Mayella invited Tom inside to help her and considering Tom Robinson was a black man, the community already did not treat him well.
Primarily, we have three witnesses’ testimonies proving Tom Robinson guilty, including Tom’s statement that showed admission to guilt. Mr. Heck Tate was our first witness testifying against Tom. Mr. Heck Tate had stated Miss Mayella was in a terrible condition when he saw her after her father
Naturally, Tom would be seen as the guilty party in this situation, but here’s why he isn’t. Mayella Ewell, the so-called victim, Heck Tate, Bob Ewell, and Tom Robinson all had different accounts on what happened on the twenty-first day of November. Heck Tate, the sheriff of Maycomb County, took the stand first in this trial. Heck was dressed formally in a suit and tie. However, when Mr. Gilmer and Atticus Finch approached him to question him, he became nervous and stiff.
Tom Robinson was put on trial on August 26th, 1935 for the raping of Mayella Violet Ewell and was found guilty not much longer after that. The crime, November 21st, 1934, has two different views- the Ewell’s and then Tom’s. I, Jem Atticus Finch, believe Tom Robinson is not guilty for numerous reasons. My dad, Atticus Finch was the defendant of Tom Robinson and I too wish to defend him. I’m a twelve year old boy living in Maycomb County with my Aunt, father, and sister.
Chapter 17, pp 231-238: With the first day of the trial starting, Mr. Bob Ewell is called to the stand to the stand to be questioned. Atticus targets the matter of Mayella Ewell's bruises which were all on her right eye. Mr. Ewell claims he caught Tom Robinson in the act of the crime but Atticus questions him about the bruises on her face, and then makes Mr. Ewell sign an envelope. This made the courtroom notice that he was left handed which revealed that he had probably
The trial of cotton worker Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping nineteen year old Mayella Ewell back in November, has begun. Robinson was arrested on November 21 after Mayella identified him as her attacker. The accused worked for Mr. Link Deas and is married with three children. None of the other Ewell children nor their father were home at the time.
Atticus Finch This morning, Maycomb’s beloved Atticus Finch was murdered by the vicious Robert Ewell, as a result of his work on the criminal defense of Tom Robinson. The lovely father of two young children and lawyer in Maycomb county who fought for Tom Robinson during a groundbreaking case that inspired many to reconsider their social norms, was murdered as a result of his work on this case. Robert ‘Bob’ Ewell, the father of the victim, Mayella Ewell, is rumoured to drink and abuse his children, and was not happy with Atticus’ attitude in the court regarding Robinson’s innocence and humanity. The day after the trial met at court, Bob Ewell approached Atticus at the post office, spat on his face and stabbed him in the stomach.
Even though the jury found Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, in that matter Atticus Finch, lawyer defending Tom Robinson, said that Tom Robinson was not guilty because he only has one arm and there is no way that Tom Robinson was able to hurt her while Bob Ewell is perfectly fine and
(207). When the holes in the Ewell’s testimony were shown to the jury they still came to the conclusion that Tom Robinson was guilty. This is like how the Scottsboro boys were convicted even when the women who had accused them had revealed that they just made it up as an excuse. Tom Robinson was affected by the outcome of the trial because he was imprisoned. This also shows that justice was not the prime factor there, but it was the color of one’s
Ewell begun her testimony. With much emotional difficulty, she struggles but tells a shaky account of how she called in Mr. Robinson to the house to chop some furniture, when she was suddenly attacked. Mr. Finch then questioned Ms. Ewell with inquiries about her personal life, and brings up previously stated injuries to which Ms. Ewell struggles to confirm. Mr. Finch also points out Mr. Robinson’s left hand is heavily crippled from previous permanent injury. Ms. Ewell after this refuses to answer a series of questions from Mr. Finch, then refuses any more questioning at all.
The Ewells could have been lying because most likely Mayella tempted Tom. Back then if you were involved with a colored person you were disgraced by the whole town. Mayella could have been trying to cover this up and get Tom arrested so he wouldn't be able to tell anyone. The jury convicted Tom Robinson because he was colored and back then white people believed they had to stick together against the colored people. This shows that based on the evidence Tom Robinson was only convicted because of his skin color.
Ewell's behavior is revealed to be hostile and rash. His English is informal and his behavior is rude. When Robert is proven to be lying about the story he begins to act like how his son Burris did to his teacher. It is also revealed that he was the one to give Mayella all the injuries Sheriff Taft witnessed after it was discovered that Mr. Robinson has no mobile use of his left arm. And if Mayella had a bruised right eye the person must be left handed and it is revealed that Mr. Ewell is left handed after Atticus tested him by asking him to write out his name on a piece of paper.
