In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee talks about discrimination based on gender role, age, and skin color. The characters in this book all have different personalities that influences others. Maycomb, Alabama in 1930’s is where everything happened with slavery and struggling with being poor. The characters Scout, Jem, and Dill had a strong bond and had lots of courage. Shows that justice means other things to other people. Not all race in the 20th century were treated equal some examples from To Kill A Mockingbird are Tom Robinson’s case, Scout Finch, and a bias court system.
Scout may not be a lover but she is a fighter. She doesn’t let people walk all over her. Like when Dill didn’t show her attention Scout beat him

There are some people that treat Scout bad because how she dresses and acts. For example, Aunt Alexandra, she doesn’t like the way that Scout dresses or she doesn’t act the way she should. Scout gets into a lot of fights with boys at her school and girls back then don’t fight.“You aren’t a nigger lover then, are you”? This quote doesn’t really mean anything but for the person who’s saying is trying to make it sound trashy. (Made up word). In this book it showed a lot of racism and gender role. For scout she always tried to push through all the negativity around her. “But around here once you have a drop of negro blood that makes you all black”. With this quote Scout and jem was trying to figure out how to divide society and racism. “Scout I’m telling you for the last time shut your trap or go home. I declare to the lord your getting more like a girl everyday.” From this quote Scout does not like being called a girl. She refuses to be called a girl or that she acts like a …show more content…
The court system is not equal at all but that didn’t stop some characters in this book. Some of them would find another way to achieve Justice. “There’s something in our world that makes men lose their heads.” (Atticus telling scout a black man will never win) The court system was never fair. The white men would always win. “Judge Taylor was pulling the jury; “Guilty...Guilty...Guilty...Guilty” Tom Robinson was convicted for a crime that he didn’t even do. They even had evidence but they still chose the white man. “Link that but might go to the chair, but he’s not going til the truth is told and you know what the truth is.” This quote is saying that even though he may not ever be free from prison they still want the truth told. (It feels like they accomplished something) Tom Robinson had no chance of winning the case because the court system was bias. He had no chance because
For he said, “nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything --like snot nose. It's hard to explain -- ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody’s favoring negroes over and above themselve.” ( ) which shows that it was normal to give such a name to a person. Scout grew up hearing these names from adults and even the children in her school. These words were said about people she saw and she had no idea that it was bad.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson against all odds, but the racial prejudices at the time caused him to be found guilty and executed. Atticus at one time states, “our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.” This claim can be disproven because some defendants are still treated as second-class citizens compared to those with greater privilege and influence. Atticus’ statement that everyone is equal to the judicial system is incorrect because those who are privileged have more advantages and can avoid blame for their crimes. Many privileged individuals such as police officers can kill and beat unarmed black men and women based on “reasonable doubt” and are later freed of
In the argument between Mr.Gilmer and Atticus In to kill a mockingbird about Tom Robinson being found guilty for raping Mayella. There was impressive work of rhetorical analysis (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos). This argument takes place in a courthouse in Maycomb which if packed with the people of Maycomb. The argument between Atticus and Mr.Gilmer was about Tom Robinson to find out if he truly raped and abused Mayella. In the argument between them both used Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
Growing Up in Maycomb Growing up is part of life. Whether you realize it or not with age comes knowledge and with knowledge comes maturity. For Scout losing her innocence is inevitable. From dealing with bad teachers, going to an old lady's house everyday for month, to seeing a man be wrongfully accused of rape, to realizing you’re childhood villain is your guardian angle.
Scout keeps hearing the town and her cousin Finch are insulting her father for being a “Negro-lover”. Her father is just defending the Negro named Tom Robinson. Scout is just having a hard time understanding why people are calling her father such derogatory names but her father finally explained why. This motif is used because Scout is defending her family’s honor and won’t let anyone be rude to her family. “You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me just hold your head high and keep those fists down.
The justice system has always been the heart of America. But like this country, it has many faults. Prejudice has played a major role in the shaping of this system. In the 1930’s the way a courtroom was set up was completely different from how it looks to day. In the book To Kill A MockingBird, Harper Lee shows just how different it is.
The novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” was written in 1960 by Harper Lee in the point of view of a young innocent girl named Scout. One of the main messages that Lee has (need a new word than – indicated or set out) is racism, it plays an important role which strongly impacts many character’s lives unfairly and changes the relationship between two. Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” shows that it is wrong to hurt someone who does no harm to you, for example, black people are innocent but no way did they have as many rights as white people did. Black people lived hard lives because society was judgemental, irrational and most importantly, racist. As Scout and Jem grow older they learn to cope, take responsibility and are introduced to new aspects of life, one of which is racism.
Being a lady is one of the most important roles for a female in the southern state of Alabama in the 1930’s. It is difficult for children to understand the importance of a role and how it affects the society. One novel that clearly represents children’s oblivious nature is Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. As a female protagonist, Jean Louise “scout” Finch grows up defying the rules of society. As the story continues Scout is told to be more polite and more well behaved by Aunt Alexandra.
Based on all the information provided at the trial of Tom Robinson the jury should have found him not guilty. But in the south, white people were racist towards people of color. As a result of this Tom Robinson was found guilty with no evidence to prove that he was. In this trial, the jury was racist and prejudice towards Tom Robinson and that lead to him being found guilty of a crime that had no medical evidence at
The adult world is a frightening and complicated place. It is an ugly place full of torture, wars, and so much more. If I was given a chance to go back to childhood, I would certainly go back. Childhood is the most precious time in one’s life when valuable memories are made and shapes you into who you will become. It is the time when you are mindless, lacking in responsibility, and innocent.
This behaviour is deemed as natural, and few people question the roles put in place, this is truly terrifying so we are lead to wonder if what we accept as normal is perhaps corrupt instead. Race is the dominant cause of inequality in To Kill A Mockingbird, thus Maycomb’s views on race heavily influence every aspect of life. Although racial inequality is clearly illustrated in the in the injustice, prejudice, discrimination and antagonism surrounding the Tom Robinson trial, it is also shown more subtly throughout the novel. In Chapter 25 Atticus Finch is quoted disclosing that the corrupt justice system is a direct cause of a racist society. “In our courts, when it 's a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins” (Lee, 295).
The book surrounds the case of Tom Robinson: an innocent black man being tried for rape. Also, the book follows three kids and their interest in the town’s psycho. As demonstrated in the novel, despite what society may think, a person does not need to fit into gender roles to be content with life. For starters, Aunt Alexandra is perhaps the biggest pest in trying to conform Scout into a woman-like mentality.
Jem and Scout Character Development Jem and Scout are essential to the themes -of courage, compassion, social justice and morality- within “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Their characters change and grow throughout the novel, they are becoming far more mature than most children their age. On their journey, their father Atticus is key to their development. He is a pillar of all the themes addressed within the novel and does his best to instill these in Jem and Scout. The development of Jem and Scout is twofold, in part they change as a natural part of growing up.
This quote shows Scout does not give into people’s thoughts and opinions on her. Atticus does a good job as a father by letting Scout dress and act as she wants. A lot of stereotypes exist in Maycomb but Scout learns to not let them affect her and to continue and do what makes her happy. All in all, Scout has been dealing with stereotypes all her life and knows that they should not affect her life and what she does, and she should do what makes her
Jean Louise Finch, nicknamed Scout, is the protagonist of “to kill a mockingbird”. She is almost 6 years old when the book begins and 9 when it ends. At the beginning of the book the reader might get the impression that she is in fact a boy, because her behaviour doesn’t suggest otherwise. Her gender is not specified until page 7 when Jem mentions it. She wears bangs and overalls, which is unusual.
