To Kill A Mockingbird To Kill A Mockingbird is about a lawyer named Atticus who chooses to defend a African-American man named Tom just as equally as he would defend a white man in a court room. This novel takes place in the 1930's when there was racism going on between blacks and whites. Atticus is a person in the novel who choose to learn to understand others. By showing that he does this, his quote said “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” In this novel there are a couple of people who have trouble understanding people, not understanding people, and doing a little bit of both. Atticus is Jem and Scouts (the narrator) father. He is a lawyer who has been chosen to defend a black man named Tom …show more content…
Dolphus Raymond is a rich white man who has mixed children. He prefers to live among blacks than in a white society. He hates the fact that when it comes to certain things that blacks are always gonna be the people that everyone can blame. He acts like a drunken man so the people of Maycomb can have a reason for his behavior. His soon to be wife shot herself before the wedding because she found out about his black mistress. Mr. Dolphus learns to understand others but also doesn't learn to understand others. He showed that he understood others by putting himself in fraud to make the people of Maycomb at ease. But also this is a way to make it seem like he didn’t understand others. His quote said” I try to give em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason….. folks can say Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whiskey- thats why he won’t change his ways.” He makes it seem like he learns to understand others by making them think he’s a drunk but he’s just disgusted of the white society. On the other hand he makes it seem like he doesn't learn how to understand others because he’s doing all of this so people won’t bother him by asking
Mockingbird in Everyday Lives “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird. ”(119) In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Atticus uses this quote to teach that it is wrong to harm innocent creatures.
The people of Maycomb believe that it was because she was so distraught when finding out about the mistress. Mr.Dolphus Raymond is also the father to a few mixed children. In this chapter, Dill is very curious about Mr.Dolphus Raymond and asks Jem many questions. Jem continues to explain that blacks won't take them in, neither will the whites. Because even one drop of colored blood makes you a colored person.
Importance of Details Kathreen Perez 1)Interesting Traxler, 3 Chapter 20 detail: -The whole county thinks that Mr. Raymond drinks whiskey, but he is actually drinking coca-cola in a bag. During the 1930's, racism raged through every corner of the United States, and the imaginary district of Maycomb County displayed the effects of injustice brought upon the African-American community during that time period.
In the book, and in everyday life, prejudice is often promoted and portrayed by those who are only a step above the lowest class or people who are part of the normal crowd against people who are different. When talking about the insulting name that Atticus is being called, he said “Ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody’s favoring Negroes over and above themselves” (Lee 108). It’s clear that he doesn’t support this type of vocabulary and he thinks that low people are prone to use it. In relation to low classes, an example is the Ewell’s treatment and vocabulary towards people who are one step lower than them like Tom Robinson. Another example of a majority against the minority is the treatment of the Finches.
As, he is faced with life 's heartache dilemmas he really sees Maycomb 's true colors. Although, he is faced with these hardships early on his mental state of mind is altered as he makes his way in life trying to survive peoples mismatched thoughts and actions. Yet all those people are tricked to believe in and follow one example base on someone’s actions that are higher in the social
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice And Men, almost most of the characters lie about something. People lie even if they’re innocent because they want to protect themselves from being an outcast. Calpurnia lies about being able to read, Dolphus Raymond lies about being an alcoholic, and even worse, Mayella lies about Tom Robinson raping her. All of these false accusations lead to consequences and the only reason these people did this is because they’re too worried about their social standing in their community and they don’t want to be looked at any differently than anybody else.
but Coca-Cola.’ ” This quote shows how easily the people in Maycomb came to their own conclusions about Dolphus Raymond. Everyone thought that he had been drinking alcohol out of his paper sacks, just because of how he was hiding it and the way that he
“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird.” This quote explains how Mockingbirds are the most important symbol in this novel because without them there would be no good in the world. Harper Lee describes Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley as Mockingbirds in To Kill a Mockingbird. There are many occurrences in the novel where these three characters portray this symbol. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley are all metaphorically portrayed as mockingbirds because, Atticus is always the bigger person, Tom provides pleasure to people he encounters, and Boo looks out for the people of Maycomb.
Harper Lee uses a direct connection from “To Kill A Mockingbird” and Maycomb to the racism occurring in the south. Harper states that people change the way they act for power, language and social status. Harper Lee says “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, he is trash.” (Lee 220) By Harper Lee expressing her feelings and emotions to everyone, and wanting to include everyone in as a group, think about the ways that Harper Lee uses to connect the town of Maycomb in “To Kill A Mockingbird” to the racism that happened in the south.
Quote and page # Paragraph "'Your father does not know how to teach. You can have a seat now.' I mumbled that I was sorry and retired meditating upon my crime." (Question) page: 2 In this quote it seems like it is very interesting.
Harper Lee uses the mad dog to symbolize many things. It shows how Atticus is the one that must do the unpleasant jobs. Just like how Atticus gets rid of Tim Johnson, he also had to deal with Tom Robinson. The dog is put as an outcast just as Tom Robinson is. The dog can also be shown as foreshadowing for Tom Robinson’s case.
Quote 1: “I felt like I was a king, like I was better than them.” –3rd-grader The quote is similar to something that happens in the novel: Both Jane Elliott and Harper Lee make a point. When two groups are separated in someway one always acts better than the other. In Jane Elliott's experiment she made the third graders believe that the blue eyed people were better, than the brown eyed people.
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee creates the characters by pulling traits of people in her daily life. Atticus, Scout’s dad in the book, is a perfect example of one of these characters because he relates to Harper Lee’s father, Amasa Coleman(A.C.) Lee. In chapter 1 of the book, it says, “… yet the tradition of living in the land remained unbroken until well into the twentieth century, when my father, Atticus Finch, went to Montgomery to read law… ”(page 4-5). This quotation connects to Harper Lee’s father because he was also a lawyer, according to Scott Stabler.
