Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a novel that takes place in a small town, called Maycomb, in Alabama, narrated by Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Scout learns how to deal with many things in everyday life, including racism and criticism. While learning about these things, she finds that courage is being shown by not only herself, but by other role models around her, including her father, Atticus Finch. The theme of courage is very significant in the novel.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee explores the theme of empathy through the eyes of Scout Finch, a young girl growing up in the 1930s in Maycomb, Alabama. The novel begins with the memorable quote from Atticus Finch, Scout's father, who states, "Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. " This sets the stage for the overarching message of the novel, which is that it is wrong to harm innocent beings, like the mockingbirds, who bring joy to the world. Through Scout's interactions with a cast of diverse and strongly opinionated characters, Lee demonstrates the power of empathy and its ability to bring people together and break down barriers.
Throughout the book, To kill a Mockingbird, the author displays and defines courage in many different forms. Atticus Finch, a lawyer and a major protagonist of the book, defines courage to be “when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see through it no matter what”(Lee 149). His words suggest that true courage can come from anything, but once it is begun, that idea or object should never be given up on until the end. Atticus Finch shows courage through his will to see through his case and open a path to let litigation prevail. Scout and Jem Finch show courage through perseverance and the will to never falter.
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare,” said Mark Twain. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming of age story about two young children, Jem and Scout Finch, growing up in Alabama in the 1930s and learning what real courage is through their father, Atticus, and the people of Maycomb. They learn to see the world from other points of view, which is also how they express empathy towards others, persevering and standing up for what you believe in, and putting yourself in danger to help others. One message that Harper Lee provides us with is that courage is when you persevere to do something even when it gets more difficult.
Scout sees what her father is doing and many wonder why Atticus sees the case through, but by his definition, Atticus is portraying courage. Previously in the book, Atticus states Mrs. Dubose is courageous for giving up her morphine addiction, which puzzles Scout, so he explains Courage as, “knowing you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway, and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do”(Lee 128). With his definition of courage in mind small aspects of the book can be seen as courageous. The most prominent example of Atticus’s courage is when he stands up for Tom.
Scout gains courage throughout the book. An example of when Scout showed courage was on the first day of school. Walter Cunningham Jr. didn’t have lunch money but Miss Caroline said that she could lend him the money and he would have to pay her back the next day. When Miss Caroline held out the cash for Walter he shook his head.

It takes a lot of courage for her not to just go off on Cecil (and her father’s words echoing in her head) not to mention no one else was helping her against him so it was all her one this one. Scout further demonstrates her courage in the final chapters when her and Jem are attacked by Bob Ewell, when she hears Jem scream in pain, she runs back towards him not further away, this really shows her courage since most people would keep running. Even though she could’ve died by the hand of a deranged drunk man she still went back and got her brother up and out of there as fast as she possibly could, not even looking
"The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” (Lee, 100). I think this exposure to courage at a young age prepares Scout for the future and makes her a stronger person. Her dad is a big influence in her life and I think that he is a positive role model that she learns a lot from. The next way Atticus teaches Scout courage was

Having courage opens a window of infinite possibilities. Courage is maybe doing something that others will not do, or pursuing dreams no matter what obstacles stand in the way. Atticus, Jem, and Scout, all show great courage for the situations they are put in. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” A quote by Atticus Finch.
This valuable lesson helped Atticus later in the story because she stood up to a lynch mob to protect Jem and Tom Robinson from being hurt. If Scout didn’t know what real courage was, she may not have stood up for Tom and he could have been killed right there by the mob.
