Suicide is mentioned in the novel, but is not heavily discussed. This essay is going to detail these social issues and discuss how they are still present today and what can be done about them.
During the 1930’s, sexual assault was very common. This is partially due to the fact that women were seen as objects that were only there for the convenience of men. “Much of the debate about sexual assault revolved around

Many people receive mental health treatment before any suicide attempts. This is partially due to the fact that regular visits to a family physician checks one’s mental health status, and they can be referred to a psychiatrist before a patient can become a harm to themselves. “In 2019… the global suicide rate for women was 5.4 deaths per 100,000; for men, it was just over twice that figure at 12.6 per 100,000”(ourworlddata.org). Studies show that male suicide rates are particularly high because they are seen as stronger figures. However, this should not be the case. Men should be able to express their feelings, in a way where they should not feel ashamed to do so. Another reason that men may feel a sort of responsibility for taking care of their families when in actuality, women should also take responsibility in doing this. A lot of men in this day in age like to stick to past ways and take on the role of a traditional male in history- a male that is in charge and is there to only provide for their families, just as men stereotypically did in the …show more content…
This caused suicide to be one of the leading causes of death in males during the Great Depression. The majority of adults in this time period were suffering from severe depression and anxiety. These are the leading causes of suicide which further supports the fact that suicide was a lot more common during the Depression. Now that mental health treatment is more accessible and advanced, mental illness can be treated before it becomes a serious problem. This has led to the downfall of suicide rates in the United States and Globally. Before mental health care advanced, mental health was a very taboo subject. Lobotomy was often the only mental health treatment available. This was a severely invasive procedure that often caused death, and for patients to forget who they are. This procedure has now been stopped and is no longer used for the treatment of mental illness. Now there are residential facilities and psychiatric hospitals that can treat certain mental illnesses accordingly, and to help prevent suicide. Oftentimes, when a person attempts suicide, they are taken into a hospital for review and treatment for their own safety and the safety of others. This is a gigantic reason as to why suicide rates have dropped in the past one hundred
(CWLA). There are so many reasons behind suicide, the most common being depression. The United States has the highest death rate out of all the countries in the
As of 2013, the tenth leading cause of death in the United States was suicide (National Center for Injury and Prevention Control, 2013). Suicide has become a tragic reality for many in this country. In some cases, someone may be pondering suicide and as a way to escape their problems. In other instances, a family or close friend may have lost a loved one to suicide and, therefore, may experience traumatic grief. Of the U.S. population that has died by suicide 2012, 22.2% of those were veterans (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2012). Veteran suicide has become a concern for many citizens but getting the veterans to accept help is sometimes difficult.
No society is perfect. As much as we strive for the best, it is impossible to be impeccable. Both authors and musicians lean towards writing about events that are affecting them directly, or the society at which they live in. That being said, the literature and media at which many produce, highlight key social issues that individuals are faced with everyday. Literature and forms of media; including music reflect society's flaws in hopes to make the culture aware of the damages they are bringing on to others.
If any of theses warning signs are detected, students should seek immediate professional assistance. Furthermore, student response to suicide should be cautious rather than confrontational. Therefore, developing trust is vital in preventing suicide and building connections that can encourage communication. Students should give their attention and support while, encouraging family and friends to seek professional assistance.
Suicides have declined in recent years the problem is that they are still happening in jails and prisons. It may not be addressed in the media as much as it should be, however the problem is still there. Without the proper care inmates at times may not understand their circumstances, mentally ill inmates face a harder time with the reduction of mental hospitals. This transition period is especially hard for first time offenders who may not know how long it may take to be seen by a judge, or how long it will be till bail is posted. Nearly of all the suicides that occur half of them happen during the first week in jail ().
Depression is increasing rapidly throughout the United States today. If suicide is the tenth leading cause of death, shouldn’t
Keiski acknowledges that, “Individual therapy with a psychologist or psychiatrist is probably the most common form of treatment for people suffering from any sort of depression or need help through a crisis.” (95). In most cases, suicide is a result of how lonely the victim may feel since they may not fully receive the love and care they deserve. Hence, it is important that professional caretakers reach out to them since they may feel too embarrassed of their negative thoughts. Directly connecting to this idea, most times family members and friends are not too sure about how to address this with the victim since they do not really know how to help.
As of 2015, 5 in 100,000 girls and 14 in 100,000 teenagers commit suicide (Lewis). Teenagers are becoming more vulnerable and schools seem to be taking no notice. If these lives could be saved, it would help so many families across the united states. The National Institute of Mental Health states that there “are as many as 25 attempts of suicide to every one that is actually committed” (Eco Child’s Play). Suicides can be prevented by treatment of the illness.
In the novel, ‘To kill a mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates the small, imaginary town, the Maycomb County, as a place where racism and social inequality happens in the background of 1930s America. Not only the segregation between whites and blacks, but also the poor lived in a harsh state of living. As Scout, the young narrator, tells the story, Lee introduces and highlights the effects of racism and social inequality on the citizens of Maycomb County by using various characters such as Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Mayella Ewell. Firstly, Harper Lee portrays Boo Radley as a victim of social inequality through adjectives and metaphor in the phrase, “There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten;” ‘Long jagged scar that ran across his face’ tells us that Boo Radley has stereotype about his appearance, which forces to imagine Boo as a scary and threatening person. The phrase, ‘yellow and rotten’ make the readers think as if Boo Radley is poor and low in a social hierarchy, as he cannot afford to brush his teeth.

It is told through the eyes of a young girl, Scout Finch, as she is growing up and becoming influenced by societal attitudes. Comfortable means to be eased and relaxed. Therefore, it would be reasonable to say no one desires to be uncomfortable.

Over the years the issue of suicide has been slowly increasing. It is now the third leading cause of death among young people. The effects of suicide are tragic and felt long after the individual has taken their own life. Some people who consider suicide, however, never make a “serious” attempt at it. For every attempted suicide, there is said to be more than one person whose thought of suicide has never translated into an actual attempt.
The statistics about teenage runaways, alcoholism, drug problems, pregnancy, eating disorders, and suicide are startling. Every year, thousands of people succeed in taking their lives and even more have attempted suicide at some point in their lives. Although we have reached the stage that hearing about suicide is now common, it is was viewed as trivial and petty back then. It seems like a reverse spectrum
