I believe Lincoln was not a tyrant. A tyrant is an oppressive ruler who abuse their power. He was introduced into office with a very difficult situation, therefore; he needed to extend the powers he was given to benefit the country. In the article,”Was Lincoln a Tyrant?” they mentioned a lot of things that made Lincoln look like a bad president, but he did it all for a reason. To benefit the country. The article said, “Lincoln’s reputation is less marred because his accrual of power was equal to the threat facing the nation.” The way lincoln responded to the situation was very appropriate. There was so much tension all over the country during this time and Lincoln had a goal to fix that and relieve as much of that tension as he possibly can, even if that includes stretching out his powers to the full potential. …show more content…
The reasoning for that thinking is that he over used his power. Also in the article, “Was Lincoln a Tyrant?”, there was a lot of information about why he was a tyrant. The article stated, “In the spring of 1862, Lincoln spent considerable time meeting with the Kentuckians, urging them to agree to compensated emancipation. Their resistance led Lincoln to write the preliminary proclamation in July.” A few paragraphs in this article made it seem like he was a very selfish man that got what he wanted when he wanted it. He didn't get what he wanted to he pushed back. In his term he made a lot of poor decisions that reflected his lousy personality. Not only that but the other way around as well. His lousy and unhappy personality led to very poor
Imperial presidency, the concept of the executive branch of the United States having supreme control or total control of the United States government and the other two branches. The executive branch would undermine the authority of the judicial and legislative branch and basically become the heart and soul of the United States government. There are many reasons why this could happen and why it would last. , Rather than having reliance on the cabinet secretaries, excessive reliance could be put instead on White House aides, the civil and political decay of the judicial and legislative branch, congress could isolate the president from members of the congress and the President could make decisions in secrecy, using his executive privileges to
Lincoln did abuse abuse his power. He abused his power by ordering a blockade and 75,000 enlistments and his Decision to be more aggressive to win the war. Abraham Lincoln by George McGovern is my book club book. A quote that supports the abuse of power is, “He ordered a blockade of southern ports (a move that proved to be an effective use of Union naval superiority), and he called for 75,000 voluntary enlistments to serve for ninety days (a number that would become pitifully insane” (81). He over used his power and in result of this nothing happened or progressed.
Abraham Lincoln’s assassination was unjust because he was a helper, and he was a role model; however, some believe he had too much power. There are many reasons why Abraham Lincoln’s assassination was unjust. First, it was unjust because he was a helper and he free the slaves. Also he helped out during the civil war.
Lincoln did this in order to get the United States on the same page because of the problems going on with the Union and the Confederates. He knew that in order for the US to get better and progress he had to make a change which was Reconstruction. December 1863 was when Reconstruction was brought to the House of Representatives and the White House as a whole. All in all, Lincoln planned out that Reconstruction would work in the slaves favor and his as well but it didn’t. Overall, Reconstruction wasn’t successful because instead of it benefiting African Americans it brought on many problems with only a few advantages.
Constitutionally, Lincoln went beyond the powers the Constitution had vested in the presidency. The suspension of Habeas Corpus constitutes part of the powers granted to Congress by Article I, section 9. Similarly, the powers to raise and support armies are also vested within Congress. However, Lincoln’s desperate measures came in times of desperate needs. The legislative branch was in recess during this period and the executive took into his hands the power he felt necessary to deal with the civil
However, according to the article “Abraham Lincoln and Civil Liberties in Wartime” the Emancipation Proclamation declared slaves in the states still in rebellion to be free. Since the slaves were property, Lincoln was practically stealing them from the people who had spent money to “own” them, taking away the property that at the time they had legally paid for. In that same article, it also directly states that nowhere in the Constitution does it authorize either Congress or the president to confiscate property without compensation, and even goes directly against that. Lincoln himself even seemed to question the lawfulness of his decision. According to the article mentioned before, “Lincoln’s Abuse of Power during the American Civil War”, in his first Inaugural Address he says, "I declare that I have no purpose directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of
It has been affirmed that such charges against Abraham Lincoln, referring to the unwarranted accusations that has plague Mr. Lincoln, that he has suspended and violated the Constitution and committed treason against his own nation, are completely groundless. He has been tried for much misconduct as the President of the US, more specifically, he has been charged of committing murder, violating the first and Fifth Amendment rights of ordinary citizens and for invading a sovereign nation without congressional approval. Mr. Lincoln has done no such misconducts which warrant his presence in court, as such; he is innocent from these charges in every respect. Although the deaths of the many people who fought the Civil War were charged against him,
In conclusion, all of Lincoln`s “controversial” decisions was to keep the union together. Its all justifiable even though these actions were technically an abuse of presidential power. It can be argued that he abused the power of the presidency when he suspended the Writ of Habeas Corpus and upheld the Declaration of
Abraham Lincoln’s actions made many people very happy but also made others furious and enraged them. That is why I think that President Lincoln's death was unjustified. First of all, President Lincoln ended slavery following the end of the American Civil War when he proposed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1863. In the book “Killing Lincoln” by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard it says, “ Booth’s Hatred for Lincoln and his deep belief in the institution of slavery, coalesced into a silent rage after The Emancipation Proclamation.”
President Lincoln had to make the best decision for the country, even if he did not satisfy the interests of both groups. Presidents should not appeal to majorities nor minorities, but overall, make the best decision for the country as seen with George Washington, as well as Abraham Lincoln. Each knew what was best in the end and that is what made him a great leader. If the government continues to apply filters of consent, prevent majority factions, and let the president make their own verdicts for the country, we will all be better
Have you ever wonder why all good people that want change the world for the good most of time get killed? Well that is the same thing that happened to Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States of America, civil rights activist and talked about the emancipation about slaves. Abraham would talk about the unfair treatment to slaves and when a law was passed. But many southerners thought that he was wrong for abolishing slavery.
The President unifies the crowd and reassures his divisive country that no side is to blame, it is simply an act from God. Lincoln, being president in one of our nation's toughest times, handles the pressure and power with grace and humility as conveyed in this
As Paludan puts it Lincoln, “ preserved the unity of the nation both in size and structure” and he continue to say, “because of Lincoln four million African Americans gained options beyond a life of slavery for themselves and their children”(242). Which I can agree with, but there is more to this story than Paludan is telling. Lincoln is perceived as a hero, but as Bradford has stated that, “the measure of his importance is that he was the heart of the major political events of his ear” and furthering this statement by saying, “the major charges advanced here, if proven, are sufficient enough to impeach the most famous of public men”(246). With in saying so Bradford is calling out Lincoln on his forced changes made as president made during this era. Which is agreed upon due to looking at most events that took place during Lincoln’s term; He always had a hand in the situation before they had become a major
Even though many historians label Lincoln a dictator, “good”, “benevolent”, or even “great” accompany the title when describing him. Lincoln is considered a dictator for many reasons including, “launching a military invasion without the consent of Congress; suspending habeas corpus; imprisoning thousands of Northern citizens without trial for merely opposing his policies; censoring all telegraph communication and imprisoning dozens of opposition newspaper publishers; nationalizing the railroads…” (6). There are many examples of Lincoln’s role being more like a dictator than a president presented in the
This fact by itself emphasizes his worth as a president in being both a unifier and an overall leader. Mr. Lincoln’s vision of a more unified country encouraged him to make initiatives that helped to keep the union
