Things such as the Jim Crow law and segregation, racism, and all-white juries in the past caused extreme prejudice against people of color. Tom Robinson is an African American character from To Kill A Mockingbird with a crippled left arm, is a helpful person and a good worker. Tom Robinson from To Kill A Mockingbird is affected by racism because he was not respected by the people of the court and was convicted regardless of the evidence. His mistreatment is historically accurate as people of color were discriminated against in the past. Tom Robinson was not given the respect that he deserved. This quote is from page 201 of To Kill A Mockingbird and supports this statement as it shows “Then you say she’s lying, boy?” Atticus was on his feet, …show more content…
This parallels the Scottsboro boys incident as even when the women who accused them admitted that they didn’t do anything to them the Scottsboro boys were convicted in their court case. This quote from To Kill A Mockingbird shows this: “...her arms were bruised, and she showed me her neck. There were definite finger marks on her gullet—” “All around her throat? At the back of her neck?” “I’d say they were all around, Mr. Finch.” (171) This quote is important as the action described here cannot be done by Tom Robinson as he only has one useful arm. This closing remark from To Kill A Mockingbird alludes that Tom Robinson had not even harmed Mayella in any way, but that Bob Ewell both beat and raped Mayella “The state has not produced one iota of medical evidence to the effect that the crime Tom Robinson is charged with ever took place. It has relied instead upon the testimony of two witnesses whose evidence has not only been called into serious question on cross-examination, but has been flatly contradicted by the defendant. The defendant is not guilty, but somebody in this courtroom is.” (207). When the holes in the Ewell’s testimony were shown to the jury they still came to the conclusion that Tom Robinson was guilty. This is like how the Scottsboro boys were convicted even when the women who had accused them had revealed that they just made it up as an excuse. Tom Robinson was affected by the outcome of the trial because he was imprisoned. This also shows that justice was not the prime factor there, but it was the color of one’s

When Mr. Tate was elaborating on Mayella’s bruises, he mentioned: “there were definite finger marks on her gullet” (226) and “were all around” (226) her neck.
Men of the jury, we are here today to discuss the case of Mayella Ewell and Tom Robinson. On November 21, Tom Robinson allegedly raped Mayella Ewell when she demanded him to go inside her home to break up a chiffarobe for her, and as stated before Mayella had stated this is the first time she let Mr. Robinson into her home. When she let Tom Robinson in, he grabbed her from behind and took advantage of her while she screamed and did her best to fight him off. She ended up with finger marks around her neck and an injury to her right eye. Mr. Ewell testified that he witness the rape happen through the window, and he described the room as ‘slung around’ as if there was a fight.
The people of Maycomb think that Tom Robinson raped Mayellla even though they know nothing about the case. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, a mob of farming men went to the county jail. The men were there to kill Tom Robinson before they started the trial. “...You know what we want,” another man said. “Get

The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee and the article “Scottsboro Boys Trial” both contain controversial court cases. For “To Kill a Mockingbird” a black man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. In the “Scottsboro Boys Trial” nine young black men and teenagers are accused of raping two white women named Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. Both cases transpired in the 1930s in Alabama. This is bad for the accused as racism was at an all-time in the 1930s especially in the deep south.

In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson’s innocence can be proven through Mayella's injuries, Bob’s history of neglect, and discrepancies between Bob and Mayelaa’s testimonies. First, Tom’s disability makes it impossible for him to have caused Mayella’s injuries. For example, Heck and Bob testified that all around her neck and the right side of her face is bruised. Tom could not have done this because his left hand is weak and mangled. Bob on the other hand is left-handed.

First of, in both the Scottsboro trial and Robinson vs. Ewell trial, the jury was all white. This definitely impacted the results of both trials. If the jury had more diversity in race, the outcome may have been different toward both parties. The overall results of the trial might not have been in such unison. In the book, the results of the jury’s decision was guilty, guilty, guilty, in that essence if there were blacks in the jury to see Robinson's view, the ruling might have been guilty, innocent, innocent, guilty.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
Everyone in the courthouse on the night of the trial knew that Tom Robinson was innocent. But at the end of the trial, that didn’t matter. Tom Robinson was a black man, and because of this difference that should not make a difference, he had no say over the family of whites, the Ewells. Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted of raping and beating Mayella Ewell. The evidence of the case leads to the conclusion that Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father was responsible for this misfortune.
First, Tom Robinson should have been found not guilty because he was right handed. Mayella the victim, was punched in the face on the night of the crime. On page 235, Mr. Heck Tate stated that Mayella had a black eye on her right eye
He could not have done everything that Mayella said he did, due to the fact that he one has one working arm. The other arm was caught up in a cotton grind. Further more, it would be highly unlikely that Tom Robinson could have beat and raped Mayella the way she said he did. In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, during Atticus Finch’s closing remarks he says ,“Thomas Jefferson once said ‘ all men are created equal.”’
