Tonya Harding’s Innocence The events that took place on January 6, 1994 changed many people’s lives. That was the day that Nancy Kerrigan took a metal baton to the knee. This attack occurred at the U. S. Nationals, in Detroit, as Nancy Kerrigan left the practice ice rink. A man was waiting for her and powerfully struck her on the right knee, this caused severe bruising and tearing. The damage was severe that Nancy had to drop out of competition (Roch). In the first place, she married Jeff Gillooly at a young age. After the bumpy marriage became abusive, both verbally and physically, she left Jeff (Roch). She was pressured, by the U. S. Figure Skating Association, to return to her husband (Roch). But Tonya does what Tonya wants to do and she had enough, so she filed for divorce. That is when someone “high up” in the Association told her that if she was not with him, she would not get the scores that she deserves because she would not be the “picture perfect” skater (Roch). The skaters are also judged on their costumes, whether their ice skates are polished, the way they wear their hair and anything else that the judges decide to ask. Tonya is guilty of being strong minded and did not give in to the pressure. The next competition she placed third, even though she didn’t make any mistakes (Roch). This was not fair to Tonya, she should not have to stay in such a relationship for appearances. She should be judged on how well she skates, not if she has the perfect

Reading this book, The other Wes Moore, left me with some ideas that could of changed Wes’s life before his imprisonment. Some productive ideas I thought of for a difference that could've led Wes’s life in a different direction are, listening to Tony about staying out of the drug game and sticking with Levy, who introduced Wes to the Job Corps. These people I believe could have impacted his life significantly if there wasn't so much negativity in the community. Also, there are some ways to ensure a more productive life for the many young men who grow up on the streets, and those are, staying positive, think about your future and find people who make you want to do better in life.
The Influence of Ann Meyers in Woman in Sports Jasmine Gutierrez California State University, Bakersfield As difficult as it could have been for a woman to begin a career in a competitive sport back in the mid 1900s, Ann Meyers made sure to attain her dream of being a basketball player. Many women in the 1900s suffered a lot from discrimination, doubts and rights. Before Title IX passed, it was only right for women to stay at home and take care of their families. On the other hand, Ann grew up in San Diego with a family who taught her that she could do the same as her older brothers and play whatever sport she desired. Even as a young child, she was never interested in fashion; she lived and died for sports.

Black Female Presence; Tennis and Dance In Claudia Rankine’s, Citizen, she addresses a various amount of relatable circumstances as an African American. Rankine addresses a specific black figure in America, Serena Williams, as an example of a resilient and strong black female athlete. Serena is one of the examples in which Rankine points out racial inequality, and microaggressions in sports, she also opens up about the stereotypes placed in front of Serena and the personas Serena had to play for years of her career. I've found that in both dance and tennis, black women have faced judgement from spectacle, competed with mostly white counterparts, and have had to consistently reclaim their undeniable contribution to the sport and art form.
The most inevitable thing in life is growing up, but not a lot of people know when it happens. When trying to pinpoint the exact moment when one person came of age, it is nearly impossible to do so. If a person can do this, then that person would seem confused or review it like an old test. In Rudolfo Anaya’s novel, Bless Me, Ultima, it shows how hard it can be to pinpoint that moment of coming of age. Anaya conveys this idea by having Tony experience very notable and relevant events as he grows up.
This issue has been difficult to resolve because the one in power of these hockey organizations were primarily males, and they were set to traditional views. It was believed that boys needed more ice time since they had a potential in entering the National Hockey League (NHL), which would put up an excellent national image. Moreover, males believed that women couldn’t handle the three periods of twenty minutes that was allocated in a game of hockey, therefore women were dispensed shorter game time. Additionally, they believed that women would not be capable of ‘bodychecking’, portraying them as weak individuals physically and mentally. Blainey brought this issue to the court expressing her Human 's Rights code and she was approved by the judge to get the organization to invest time into

In this section Rankine describes the “angry black woman” stereotype with Serena Williams. Historically tennis was a sport that was dominated by white people. However, with the advent of Serena Williams arriving on the tennis scene (and doing exceptionally well) there were “those who [were] enraged that [she] was there at all–graphite against a sharp white background” (Rankine 26). Again, we are given insight into the underlying racism that is present in modern society. Serena in light of the bad calls against her in matches mentioned throughout the section, displayed outrage in the form of throwing her racket and yelling.
