“THE CLINICAL APPLICABILITY OF THREE TOOTH NOTATION SYSTEMS IN PRIMARY TEETH”
Background/ Introduction: Different regions in the world use different tooth notations according to their convenience and comfort. Also, two students belonging to the same college use different tooth notation systems which might lead to confusion and end in dental gaffe when using referral letters. To avoid this, apart from FDI system, in the recent times, Havale’s alphanumeric system and MICAP notation (Molar Incisor Canine Akram Premolar) were introduced as two novel systems.
Aim and Objectives: To assess the universal clinical applicability of three tooth notation systems in primary teeth among the first year undergraduate dental students.

In Great Britain, most practitioners use the Palmer notation, while the universal numbering system is used in United States. The FDI two-digit system is used in many other countries.1 Though many follow the FDI system as standard in their daily dental practice, there is no universal usage or a mandatory …show more content…
These notation systems are based on alphabets and numbers and give different notations to a particular tooth. For example, maxillary left lateral incisor is denoted by ‘22’ in FDI system and ‘10’ in Universal System. Considering a referral note of palmer system, upper right first molar is ‘6’ and the same number can be decoded as upper right canine when universal system is employed.
A new tooth notation system was proposed recently and according to this, letters I-incisor, C-canine, P-premolar, M-molar (MICAP) represent the four tooth classes and tooth types of each class are marked by digits (1, 2, 3) which are written as superscript and subscript on relevant letters (I,C,P,M) to represent the upper and lower teeth.2
Also, another novel alphanumeric system was introduced by Havale R in 2015 for primary teeth.3 In this system, as the dentists in the world have been accustomed for decades to use quadrant 1 through 4, the same quadrant coding is used instead of 5 through 8 as in the FDI system. The letters ‘a’ through ‘e’ are used in this system to represent the tooth
Dental trial have been extensively used in identifying the sufferers of massive disasters, such as the 9/11 bombing and the Asian tsunami. the significance of using dental records for human identification is now well predictable. Dental Biometric issues dental radiographs to identify victims in situations (e.g., fire victims) where conservative biometric features, i.e., face, fingerprint, and iris, are not available. Dental Photograph Dental photograph is a symbolic examination of teeth structure and its appearance; it gives virtual position of neighboring teeth and shapes of dental work.
I am interested in the Harcum EFDA program therefore I am looking to enhance my knowledge and skills as a dental professional. By attending the program I will get the opportunity to share experience with other students. The program will also help me to prepare for becoming an EFDA and allow me to learn and explore all the tasks I will need to complete. Such as placing and carving amalgam and composite restorations, placing sealants, coronal polishing, application of fluoride, placing of bases and liners and placing and removing matrix bands, wedges and rubber dams.
Dental practitioners are still a simple target. From motion pictures and TV, to magazines and books, dental specialists are every now and again depicted as either characteristically savage or covetous and unscrupulous. Shockingly, these dental records are regularly characteristically uneven and distort the actualities. The most recent inductee to the hit parade is James Frey's top of the line book 'A Million Little Pieces.' Although as of late on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Frey was compelled to admit to both 'oversights and untruths', he didn't down from the "memories" of his dental experience.

Before the dentist even examines any patient “clinically” , a dental assistant will typically take radiographs, or “x-rays”, of the patient. After reading Million Dollar Dentistry by Gray Kadi, I learned that the traditional way of dentistry practice is stressful and you are leaving so much money on the table if you continue to practice dentistry the old fashion way. Also I learned that if you use Mr. Kadi suggestion you will be living a happier and stress-free life. One of the biggest take-away I got after reading this book is “when everyone is responsible for everything, no one is truly responsible for anything.” I really like this concept, it gives everyone in their roles accountability and incentives to bring in new/returning patients. For example, the treatment coordinator he/she is responsible for closing the case after the patient comes out of hygiene.
Dental radiographs are important tools in the diagnosis of oral diseases. It helps the dentist to employ appropriate treatment regimen for patient’s dental conditions, and plays a continual important role in dental practice. Radiation dosage from such dental radiographs are low and are thought to present minimal risk (Enabulele & Igbinedion, 2013) The radiation protection is the science and art of protecting people and environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.
This technology allows certified dental technicians to provide restorations on a computer screen, which makes the job easier. The fabricated material can be done in a single appointment and there is no need for temporaries afterwards. Some studies have also demonstrated that CAD/CAM restorations are stronger and less likely to fracture than the milled ones from traditional techniques (Kotrzewski). This type of dental technology is available to produce crowns, veneers, and bridges, which helps to improve oral appearance. The use of the digital impressions disregards some laboratory steps, which leads to a faster and more effective product.
Ever since I was young, dentistry had sparked my interest for my career. Dentistry appeals to me chiefly because I had always wanted to be involved in a profession where I can help people. My love towards human biology especially human teeth also contributes to my career choice. Most importantly, I find human teeth interesting, often fascinating. Due to my compassionate nature, I have since long known that I would want to pursue dentistry as my career because I get to form relationships with my patients, work hand in hand with many people on a face to face basis.
