The power of nature is the most influential force in the book because nature teaches Cole about growing up and makes him notice that there are things more powerful than him. For example, in the book after he gets mauled by the bear, he starts to notice what’s around him. The irony in this book is that he never saw what nature was really about, and then when he was ripped apart he couldn’t move and enjoy what he had just discovered. The next theme is Anger, I thought that this was important because the whole story is about a boy who can’t control his anger. Anger isn’t only related to Cole but also his father.
In this part of the book Cole swore not to lie which is a big change. Cole was beaten up by his parents when he was younger and was raised in an environment of anger. He was forced to go to and island in Alaska because he smashed Peter Driscal’s head into the pavement. On the island in Alaska he was mauled by a bear for threatening it. Almost dead, Cole realized that he needed to change.

He then faces difficult and even deadly challenges. As a result of this experience, he changes from his ungovernable, supercilious ways as he comes to strong and sudden realizations of how wrong he was, and he learns how to be an honest and forgiving human being.

In a world in which survival is nearly impossible, survival has become Eliezer’s dominant goal. He admits that he lives only to feed himself. Eliezer’s relationship with his father is all-important to both of them, because it provides both with support. Though it is crucial to Eliezer to remain with his father at all costs, even the link between parent and child grows tenuous under the stress of the Nazi oppression. When, in this section, Eliezer relates with horror a story about witnessing a thirteen-year-old child who beats his father for making his bed improperly, he seems to feel that the event serves as an implicit cautionary tale.

The harsh reality is many of his family members were struggling to make ends meet while he was living a modest life because of the scholarship he had received in ninth grade.
