The Mahele was created in 1848 by King Kamehameha III. It was when the land was divided between the king, ali’i, and maka’ainana because the foreigners started to demand land from the Hawaiians. King Kamehameha III was scared that the foreigners would start to force the land upon him if he doesn’t grant their wish. There was a lot of forcing upon in the Pacific Islands at the time from the French, which threatened King Kamehameha to create the Mahele. The Mahele, however, was not justified because the laws made lead to the people who owned land to have different rights, the price for taro land had gone up to an unreasonable amount, and the Hawaiian children had to eat a raw potato for their food source.
1780, Kalani`opu`u king of the big island and kamehameha`s uncle, met with his chiefs who helps run the island kingdom, one of those chiefs was Kamehameha. Kalani`opu`u, close to death of old age had told them that after his death Kalani`opu`us eldest son would be the new king. Kiwala’o, now king divided up the lands of the Big Island thus leading to trouble. Kamehameha lived in Kohala and agreed to become the leader of the windward side of the island, he had his own crew of chiefs who remained loyal to only to Kamehameha. In Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s book This Earth of Mankind, the depiction of the Natives in this novel permits the author to expose the effects of colonization by the Europeans in Indonesia. Throughout this novel, the Natives are consistently portrayed as the social group, who is deemed inferior in comparison to the Europeans, which contributes to their oppression. The two characters that represent this attribute are Nyai Ontosoroh and Minke. Despite her backstory and status as a concubine for Herman Mellema, Nyai Ontosoroh is one of the central characters in this novel. She is described as a formidable Native woman, “...this Nyai Ontosoroh who was talked about by so many people...”(29).
