The tourism industry is a major pillar of the economy of Hong Kong. According to statistics of Hong Kong Tourism Board, “it contributed to 5 per cent of Hong Kong’s GDP (HKTB 2016). It employs around 271 800 persons, accounting for 7.2 per cent of total employment. In 2015, visitor arrivals declined by 2.5 per cent over 2014 to 59.3 million. The total number of visitors in the first quarter of 2016 fell by 10.9 per cent over the same period of 2015.” Based on the total, while Mainland arrivals fell by 15.1%, non-Mainland arrivals increased by 5.4% (HKTB 2016).
