Tourism is the number one industry here in the Bahamas and takes priority in a lot of aspects especially when it comes to the environment. Our motto is ‘Sun, Sand and Sea” but without even realizing it with our unsustainable tourism practices we are risking all three of those things because they are being damaged immensely. Money is a major factor when it comes to what is put where and at what cost. If a hotel is expected to create jobs and have a great amount of cash income then there is no thought on the beach it is but right on the shore on, or the mangroves that were torn down to build. With all of these hotels being built on the coast it is harmful to the beaches they build on. It can lead to coastal erosion and beach erosion, if the beach has nowhere to push the sand back to and it is them washed away over time that sandy beach will become a rocky shore. This can affect all organisms that lived on that beach well as sea turtles. Sea turtles come to nest and lay their eggs on these beaches and tend to leave behind beaches that have been developed on and if there is no beach to return to that can have a severe impact on them and reproduction. The loss or erosion of a coastal area doesn’t only affect the environment but also tourism because of the loss of aesthetic value. Other than the beaches mangroves could be immensely impacted. When there is development happening on the coast where mangroves may be there would be cut down and the area would be filled if needed. This is the destruction of a very important ecosystems that has so much value to not only the tourism industry but fishing industry but also protection of the coast and have intrinsic value of its own. When destroying these mangroves you affect the sea grass beds and the coral reefs. these mangroves prevent storm surge and erosion and protect biodiversity including commercially important fish.
