In 2009, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program won the PR News' Platinum PR Award for the Best Community Relations Campaign (About Toys for Tots). This is a later received award but it is still a very important one. According to Charity Watch, a highly trusted website, Toys for Tots receives an overall grade of -A (Charity Watch). This is a very impressive score that not many charities of the same size receive. Charity Watch also states that Toys for Tots spends 79% of revenue on the cause. However on the Toys for Tots’ official website they say that 97% of all revenue goes to their cause (Toys for Tots). Alex Hollings, a former employee of Toys for Tots, stated that the marines never touch the toys in the process of donating them; However this is because the organization has other business, and community centers distribute the toys for them. And the strict rules about not being able to provide for families is because Toys for Tots is not allowed to hand out the toys themselves. Toys for Tots is a very large organization so many people probably do not know or understand what is going on behind the scenes of Toys for

I see the value in contributing time and work to an organization that helps others in need. Many people depend on food donations and the service and work provided by many people of the organization are making positive impact in the
One of the organizations I am proud to donate to is the United Service Organizations, or USO. Since 1941, the USO has supported troops at home and abroad. With the intent to lift the spirits of troops and their family members, the organization endeavors to provide a “home away from home” feeling for all the families dealing with the rigors of serving overseas. The organization became famous for its Camp Shows over the years--with some occurring in active war zones. To make this all possible, the USO relies heavily on private donations.
The organization, which I decided to volunteer two hours of my day to, was Cumac. Cumac is located in Paterson, New Jersey and they work to serve the people in the counties of Passaic, Paterson, and Northern New Jersey. They work with a staff of 21 and volunteers from all over to help people in need with food and supplies they would need to survive. Their mission statement is: “CUMAC feeds people and changes lives. It works to alleviate hunger and its root causes for those in need in Paterson, Passaic County, and northern New Jersey.”
My mother has worked for Children’s Mercy for nine years, and it has been a huge blessing to hear about all of the wonderful things that Children’s Mercy does for our community. As a result of Children’s Mercy being a not for profit hospital, their funding must come from sources outside of their patients. One of the biggest fundraisers that Children’s Mercy conducts is called The Big

Camo Cares is another organization that I am very involved with. The event is held every year and money is raised to send children with life-threatening illnesses and wounded veterans on a Hunt of a Lifetime. Just the mere fact that I was asked to be a part of this is overwhelming. It is a heart-wrenching experience each year, one that I will never forget. It teaches me to be thankful and unselfish each time I dedicate my time to help others.

Bill looked around Los Angeles for a agency that donates toys to children, but there was nothing of the sort. Bill and Diane wanted those needy children to experience the joy of Christmas and receiving toys for that holiday, so in the end, they created the foundation Toys for Tots.
Before joining the National Honor Society, I had very little experience volunteering. I stayed in my own bubble, not knowing the importance of helping my community. Despite my previous experiences, NHS has helped me realize that I enjoy volunteering and that it is a vital part of creating a successful community. Whether it be through volunteering in school or in York County, NHS has provided me with endless opportunities to meet new people and expand my worldview via volunteering. One of my favorite volunteer opportunities that I participated in was the York Area Down Syndrome Association Buddy Walk.

Not only do these clubs recognize academic excellence, they also provide many opportunities for community service. Blood drives, food drives and Operation Christmas Child are only a few of the projects that we participate in throughout the year. I am
Christmas plays a huge role in every kid’s childhood, but not every kid is fortunate enough to have one. No matter what situation my family has been in I was always fortunate to wake up Christmas morning to gift under the tree, but now I understand that Christmas is not about what you get, but about what you are able to give back. To play a part in something as beautiful as in helping a kid have a better childhood really touched my heart and helped me see past the material things in life. Often people take for granted that they have gifts under the tree, or the luxury of having an iPhone, or nice clothes, but never stop to realize that there are people in the same community that don’t even have the luxury of waking up to a hot meal or clean clothes to wear. I can see, that a small personal gift under the tree can bring joy to a kid’s life, but it is also much more.
