When people think of the word, “school,” they think of student’s hanging out in the hallways, teachers scolding children for misbehaving, and groggy teenagers complaining of getting little to no sleep. However, there are other forms of education that people rarely consider. In 2016, it was recorded that one in four students, or 5.8 million, are enrolled in online courses, and 28% of higher education students are taking at least one online class. It is evident that online schools are rapidly growing, and will continue to grow as society becomes more technological. The surroundings of a child during a lesson will make or break the entire lecture. If a student is unfocused or distracted by a peer, then he/she will not retain the new information being taught and will miss essential details. In many middle and high schools there are bullies, peer pressure/drama, and inappropriate games played by students that could harm a student’s self-image and encourage them to make bad decisions, such as smoking, drinking, or taking drugs. In an online school, a student would be free from distractions and in their own personal study area, giving them full customizability of their learning environment and allowing them to make great use of their time. They’d also be in a secure and safe environment free from the bad influences that lurk the hallways of a traditional school. Furthermore, having their children at home is also very enjoyable for parents. In traditional school, students see their teachers more than their own parents each day, and this might cause a distanced relationship between mom/dad and daughter/son. Having their children home during the day can be both enjoyable and worthwhile. Parents like seeing the light bulb flicker on in their young ones’ heads as they finally grasp a difficult concept, and generally just love having their kids around more. Traditional schools do provide gym classes that improve both the students’ health and teamwork skills. They also further develop the social skills of the youth and make sure kids know how to communicate with each other off of screens and in the real world. Having said that, online schools open up the schedules of students. While traditional schools allot time for exercise during the day, the flexibility and relaxed style of online schools in turn open up time outside of school for students to get their athletic fix and spend time with other kids their age. In fact, online students might even get more time to spend with their friends during their hours of free time each day. This way they’ll still get the amount of exercise they need and they won’t be isolated throughout their youth; their social skills will be well-developed. One of the most common misconceptions about online school is that it is extremely unhealthy, and that the students are just sitting around on the computer all day, but online learners still read books, conduct science experiments, and write on paper, albeit less than traditional
