Introduction Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of death and injury in the United States (US) each year. In fact, road traffic accidents are thought to be in the top ten causes of death in the US, suggesting a crisis (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). The purpose of this paper is to discuss road traffic accidents and how individuals cope with the trauma associated. More specifically, this paper will describe the traumatic responses of individuals who is seriously injured in a road traffic accident. Post-accident, one traumatic response that an individual may develop is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Generally speaking, teens are more likely to be involved in a serious road traffic accident than older adults because they have a tendency to speed and drive while under the influence. In relation to gender, research suggests that male drivers are more likely to be involved in a road traffic accident An individual involved in a road traffic accident may physically suffer from chronic pain after the accident. Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists for 3 – 6 months and causes significant difficulty in the individual’s daily functioning. Chronic pain of an individual may also be associated with a physical disability that resulted from the accident. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has existed since the dawn of time, but only in the past 50 years has it been recognized as an actual problem. However, even now, it is still not always acknowledged as a legitimate condition. As a result, it is not always properly treated.
First, Miss Andrews names the disorder and explains what PTSD means; such as, “the post in PTSD means it happened a while ago” (Andrews, 2012, p. 2). Second, Miss Andrews details the events that cause parents to suffer from PTSD. Namely, car accidents, fighting in a war, natural disasters, and getting attacked or hurt by someone. Next, the author describes the feelings and actions their parents may exhibit. Last, Miss Andrews tells children it is not their job to fix the problem; it is an adult problem.

One of my career goals, is to with Veterans who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Due to combat experience in the Army, I am aware that there are many Veterans who have PTSD and sometimes it may go undiagnosed. Soldiers in the military are taught to keep their vulnerabilities internalized because if they express their vulnerabilities they may appear to be weak. This issue impacts soldier’s mental health in a major way. When soldiers get out of the military, they be unaware that they exhibit the symptoms of PTSD.
Even if the victim may not recall everything that occurred, they may still experience triggers. According to Matsakis, “Even if trauma survivors suffer from an amnesia, they still are able to react to triggers consciously or unconsciously. Present day sights, smells, actions, feelings, and people involved in an incident can recreate the event” (Matsakis 114). Present day occurrences can recreate a very realistic reenactment of the traumatic event. Although I hadn’t been driving an actual car, motions of the vehicle itself made me feel as though I was back in the rolling golf cart once more.

I have friends that have been in combat zones and have flashbacks due to certain noises. It is terrifying to watch them go through this. Billy Pilgrim is a prisoner of war, who is constantly reliving every event he has ever encountered in his life. In the beginning of the book, it is mentioned that Billy Pilgrim has a case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Because of this, Billy is constantly reliving different moments in his life, or in other words, time travelling.
