Trafficking in human beings is one of the fastest growing criminal acts in the world and also in India. More often the vulnerable sections of the society that is women and children are victims of this activity. Trafficking in human beings is behind only drugs and weapon trade in terms of unaccountable profit generation annually. The reasons for the increase in this phenomenon globally are multiple and complex. This problem is rampant in both rich and poor countries alike. India is no exception to this. Taking into consideration the grave ground realities in India with respect to the human trafficking and also as a follow up on the request put forth by the then United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights the National Human Rights Commission in the year 2001 designated one of its members as Focal Point on Human Rights of Women.
The Focal Point undertook several valuable activities, which included an Action Research on Trafficking in Women and Children in India and a National Workshop to Review the Implementation of Laws and Policies Related to Trafficking: Towards an Effective Rescue and Post-Rescue …show more content…

The Copies of both the Reports were forwarded to concerned officials in all the States/Union Territories for compliance to ensure effective tackling of the menace of human trafficking. Till now very few States have reported back to the Commission informing them about the various steps taken to curb the human trafficking..
