1.1 THEORETICAL BACKGROUND CONCEPT OF STRESS
Every individual survive by continually adapting to the demands of an ever-changing environment. The work of various researchers has lead to conceptualization of words stress and coping. Erkutlu & Chafra (2006) explains stress as a response of an individual to demands (stressors) placed on him and describes this situation as disequilibrium between person and his surrounding. This situation occurs due to failure to cope successfully with demands. It is psychobiological response of an individual to psychological or physical needs that affects the wellbeing of a person (Laposa et al 2003). It is defined as a physical or emotional response when individual sense imbalance between demands made on him and available resources (Welbourne et al, 2007). Since this early use of the term stress, there has been continuing confusion and disagreement on the current nomenclature in the field (Levi, 1998).

A transactional theory of stress and coping (TTSC) was developed and tested by him (Lazarus, 1966; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Heuristic value is present in stress as a concept, but it is not a single factor that is measureable. Lazarus (1966) argued that stress is a result of transaction between a person and his environment and do not exist in the event. Cognitive appraisal occurs in response to stress and individual person considers two major factors namely tendency of stress becoming threatening to the individual, and availability of resources those are essential to tolerate minimize, or eradicate the stress experience.
