Disabled individuals have always fallen short when it comes to opportunities and inclusion in sports compared to non-disabled people. These individuals either have no confidence to play sports, or lack the resources to access it. Whether it is a physical or mental disability, people living with these situations look down upon themselves and feel as if they are not good enough or capable of playing sports. As a result, people put up barriers in their mind thinking that they will never be able to play sports again, and to make matter worse, the amount of resources to accommodate the disabled in sports is also greatly lacking. One of the main improvements that are helping many physically disabled people is the transition between basic prosthetics to bionics. Prosthetics deals with artificial limbs that allow for partial regaining of movement for the physically disabled. On the other hand, bionics refers to a more advanced type of prosthetics, which mimics an actual limb, bringing back full functionality. The transition to bionics was successful as it prevented any of the issues that the users of prosthetics had faced. Instead of providing aid, prosthetics prevented the disabled from participating in sport because according to the article “Artificial Limb Transitions Between Prosthetics and Bionics” the writer Bob Michaels states, “ Prosthetic legs, for example, are often so heavy that their use exhausts amputees, making walking burdensome and unpleasant exercise”. As a result, this shows how the faulty technology of prosthetics is preventing people from not just participating in sport, but preventing them from accomplishing such an effortless task as walking. In addition, the introduction of the specialized wheelchair gave a chance to what seemed impossible at the time, and gave rise to the handicap people participating in many different sports. From 1939 – 1945 during the Second World War, many veterans returned home with physical disabilities, all of which had dreams to play sports. As stated in wheelchairbasketball.ca, the neurologist Sir Ludwig Guttman was given a task to start a spinal cord injury centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, England. Sir Ludwig Guttman treated many people with disabilities; he then decided to create a way for disabled veterans to play sports and became the first pioneer to organize sport using specialized wheelchairs. Many disabled individuals were given the opportunity to participate in many different sports such as wheelchair basketball while being apart of the Paralympic games. Furthermore, along with physical disabilities, there are now new and improved gadgets that offer better visual and hearing aid. According to the Supporting Success for Children with Hearing Loss foundation, there are specialized hearing aids that are water resistant, which is crucial in sports, as well as FM for communication between coaches and players.
