One of the greatest transition periods in our lives is the transformation from being a high school student to a university student. It is the phase where students have to face difficulties from both academic and personal aspects. This essay is going to inform about the process of the transition and illustrates how can a person become a successful first year undergraduate. It is a program that “introduces students to the individual and resources they will need when they are in personal or academic jeopardy-resources that many students overlook or forgot are available to assist with their success in college” (Shupp, 2015, p1). Orientation week is a useful support because it helps reduce the issues where students are unable to cope with the overload of information. Students get to make new friends within the orientation week with less pressure, as most of the people are also new to the university. Ultimately, orientation week acts like the last bridge between the last stages of enrolment and the first stages of retaining and helps prepare students for when the actual term begins. FANS stand for friends of the arriving new students; they are also known as peer mentors. Glaser et al. (2006) notes that through peer mentoring, first year students can be retained and gain a sense of belonging, and develop their communication and organizational skills (cited in Beltman and Schaeben, 2012, p2). First year students will benefit from FANS as students often find it easier and more comfortable to consult or communicate with people in the similar age that may have also faced the same kind of experiences as they are facing before. In the “College Pressures” essay, made by William Zinsser, he shows the reader the struggles that college students have while they are in school. Within the essay he brings up the four pressures that college students face: economic, parental, peer, and self-induced. Zinsser makes his essay easy to understand by not being extravagant with his words and very straightforward. He also likes to transition from relatable topics and how he views them into interesting examples.
Zinsser shows the poor environment and attitudes students are effected by and exposed to. Students need to abandon the mindset of viewing college as a competition for jobs and a direct gateway to a specific occupation. Students need to think outside of looking the best on their transcripts. Self-induced pressure needs to be reduced if a student wants to enjoy their college experience.
