The following diploma thesis aimed to examine the translation strategies used in the subtitling and dubbing translations of the animated film Bee Movie, based on three parameters: inserts, language variety, and omissions and condensations.
Slovenian cinema-goers are able to watch animated films in the subtitled and/or dubbed version. Subtitling and dubbing are two types of audiovisual translation, whereby the linguistically diverse European countries can be divided into subtitling and dubbing countries, depending on which method is prevalent. Following this distinction, Slovenia is part of the former along with Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands. Dubbing countries include Austria, Italy and Germany, to name but the largest ones. Despite its

Subtitles disturb the image and cover up the screen. Their content is incomplete, since they cannot always incorporate the entire dialogue. Furthermore, they constitute a shift of mode from spoken to written language, which makes it difficult to retain all means of spoken language. However, subtitling has its advantages: the viewer is able to hear the original actor’s voice, timbre and intonation. Subtitles also have education value, especially for children. They allow them to develop reading skills and to enrich their mother tongue and foreign language vocabulary. The advantages of dubbing can be observed as the disadvantages of subtitling: dubbing does not disturb the image and the dialogue can be easily understood by children who have not learned how to read yet. It is also significant that the language mode is retained. On the other hand, a dubbed translation can be subjected to sociopolitical circumstances and has to be adjusted due to lip synchronicity or matching mouth movements. The audience is not able to hear the original actor’s voice, whereby some authenticity is lost, which is one of the major disadvantages of dubbing. It is important to stress that in animated films, both in the original and the dubbed versions, animated characters are brought to life by the specific voice actors in the recording studio, so no authenticity is in fact …show more content…
The story revolves around Barry the bee who is determined to fight our exploitative capitalist society. The verbal humour is intended for adult viewers, while children laugh at Barry’s countless adventures. Due to Slovenia’s subtitling tradition, the empirical part also includes viewership ratings of subtitled and dubbed versions, which show that animated films are becoming increasing popular among Slovenian viewers. We also examined the characteristics of a detailed dialogue sheet, where different comments are added to the original in order to complement it and provide interpretation for translators and directors. This is followed by a comparative analysis of translation strategies using three parameters, which have been selected based on the theoretical comparison between subtitling and dubbing, and which best represent the differences between the two methods, their advantages and disadvantages. After thoroughly watching the Bee Movie on DVD, we selected examples that best represent the individual
The setting of a story can vastly affect a story. A horror story is a lot different if it’s set on a park instead of a old haunted house. The Secret life of Bees is set in South Carolina during 1964.In 1964 the civil rights movemant was slowly winding down as African Americans got rights but the tensions where still there. In The Secret Life of Bees the setting has a huge effect on the plot because Zach gets captured because he is with lily, May commits suicide becuase he is always so sad from all the african americans geting killed and hurt, and lily and rosaline run away because they don 't want to get hurt.
Almost every child has thought about running away from home at least once in their life, if not more. Although this usually is an empty threat, for Lily Owens, the protagonist in The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, it was a milestone. The summer of 1964 marked the year she finally realized there was nothing holding her back from escaping her abusive father. As she leaves home for her journey, she takes her African American, motherlike housekeeper with her, who was in jail for insulting some racists. Together, they find their way to three beekeeping sisters, one of which helps Lily to finally understand what happened to her late mother.
In the article, Birds and Bees, No Let’s Talk about Dollars and Cents, by Ben Stein, he successfully makes his point to inform his son that he needs self discipline to create human and financial capital to have a more stable life. The young boy has been living large his whole life and his father wants to help him keep it going by having self-discipline to make smart decisions so he doesn’t live in fear and insecurity. Ben Stein uses many anecdotes to get the point across to his son and the readers of the New York Times that people are capable of coming from nothing and turning into something with the willpower to make smart choices. With the use of anecdotes and repetition all throughout the letter, it allows Stein to utilize logos, pathos,
The 2006 British film “The Queen” depicts events that unfolded after the death of Princess Diana in 1997. In the film, the British Royal Family did not react the way the public expected them to. Due to their lack of grief that was publicly shown towards Princess Diana’s death, it resulted in their actions being heavily criticised by British media and the public. Newly elected Prime Minister, Tony Blair, had to step in to help the Royal Family deal with their bad relations to the public, with the help of Diana’s ex-husband, Prince Charles. From the in-depth movie analysis, this essay will be able to show that the media is able to influence the people and their stance towards certain topics by applying these media theories: agenda setting through gatekeeping, dramatization, and two-step flow of communication.
The functional analysis theory was founded by August Comte and Herbert Spencer, they view society as a living organism and believed that “if society is to function smoothly, its parts must work together in harmony” (Henslin,16). Emile Durkheim said that as long as all part fulfill their functions the society would be at a normal state but when the functions are not fulfilled, the society would be at an abnormal state. This theoretical perspective has three functions that surround these ideas: manifest, latent, and latent dysfunctions. Picking the Bee Movie to represent this theory was a no brainer, it all about structure and maintaining that structure in order to have a continuously thriving society. Barry, the main character doesn’t want to fall into the societal norm that have been set by those before him, he wants to explore and make sure that any decision he makes gives his life meaning and isn’t just an obligation to his
The film I am analyzing, A League of Their Own, would be categorized as a narrative film about the growth of women’s baseball teams during World War II. It follows the dramatized story of Dottie Hinson’s time in her baseball league and their struggles to make women’s baseball be taken seriously; however, the film focuses more on Dottie’s personal goals and relationships. With the added personal challenge of Dottie’s increasing rivalry with her sibling, Kit, as well as the uncaring attitude of their manager, Jimmy Dugan, Dottie’s tale is filled with tension and emotion that is shaped to draw the audience in. To showcase the drama of the film and to help the audience become attached to the stories of the characters, the movie uses flashbacks, comedy, and interpersonal drama to manufacture the story of our main character, Dottie, more interesting and engaging to the audience. As is easily evident simply by the summary of the movie, A League of Their Own is a nonfiction, narrative film made for entertainment and drama, and uses the time period as the circumstances of the story relevant to the audience.
How “The Secret Life of Bees” and Real Life Lily in “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd is a big social change in the society of their time, she did not find black people as being less of a human being. “Then he saw Rosaleen and started to rub the bald space on his head with such agitation I thought he might rub down to the bone”(Sue Monk Kidd page 30). 1964 in the United States, racism toward the black community was still very present, especially in the South, which is where Lily and her African American friend Rosaleen lived. For something as simple as walking into a prominently white church blacks were looked down upon and sometimes forced out, but Lily brought Rosaleen in like she was no different than herself. “So you’ve been here the whole time, staying with colored women”(Sue
Lion, directed by Garth Davis, is a compelling interpretation of a remarkable true story of Saroo Brierley, lost as a child and reunited with his family 25 years later. Throughout Davis explores the unique circumstances under which Saroo is separated and reconnected with his family and his journey along the way. At some points of the film, I was confronted by how Saroo, a five-year-old boy, expertely navigates, with great instinct and genuine innocence, through an extended, yet life threatening ride. To put it in other words, Lion is a journey that grabs you entirely; whether you want it or not, and you are involved in each and every scene. I instantly fell in love with the connection and relationship between Saroo and his older brother
Storytelling has been a part of people's’ lives since the beginning of time. It started with just verbal communication, then it was translated into written word, and now there hundreds of ways to tell those same stories. Movies and books, for example, are two very different ways to tell stories to an audience. A story can be a book, but not a movie or vice versa. Many books are made into movies, but lose major elements in translation.
Tim Burton contributes to the world of animation in the film industry and redefined stop motion . Lighting is an important cinematic technique directors can use to set the mood for a particular scene. For instance, high-key lighting is used to flood a scene with light, often making the set and characters appear happy and safe. In contrast, low-key lighting casts deep shadows across the set and characters creating a sense of danger. Burton makes good use of lighting techniques in many of his films.

It is understood that the media shape our notions of love (Illuz, 1997). Therefore romantic messages in children’s films should be examined in order to determine whether unrealistic romantic ideals are being pushed toward young impressionable audiences. This paper will examine the romantic plotlines in the Disney musical film “Beauty and the Beast” using the feminist and post-modern critiques of love. The film begins with a fairytale prologue in which a prince is cursed for his selfishness by an enchantress.
Akeelah and the Bee showcases the message of the courage it takes to overcome obstacles in life, the importance of being who you are, and that these traits will help you reach your goals. Akeelah accomplishes this with help from the community and by proving the stereotypes wrong. This successful movie has given other girls like Akeelah to not let other people or ideas stop them from doing the things that make them who they
