Most athletes become injured at least one time in their career and need help. Sports medicine physicians work with all different levels of athletes who are injured from their sport and assist them to full recuperation. To do well in this field, physicians must have a concern for the athletes’ needs and the ability to diagnose and treat injuries from the athletes’ sport. Although the extra four years of schooling is required to get a doctorate degree, there is a personal benefit of guiding athletes back to recovery and full rehabilitation. Therefore, those who thrive in helping people recover to their best selves should consider this line of work.
As a hopeful future undergraduate at IUPUI, I am eager to participate in the nursing program. Currently I am taking a class at my high school that will allow me to become a certified nursing assistant if I pass the state exam. Although I have only started this school year, I can tell that I have found my passion through nursing. With this simple goal, I plan to focus on my school work and dedicate my time at IUPUI. Besides the school aspect, I also want to participate in numerous extracurricular activities offered.
It is crazy thinking about all the resources we have now to help people return from injuries. We have come such a long way in helping people with technology over the years. I learned that ultrasound can help warm muscles up in spots that are hard to warm up. Since I will be taking kinesiology next semester and I am really looking forward to it. During my junior year of high school, I changed my mind on what I wanted to go to school for. Being a veterinary technician is an exciting job, you are always on your feet doing something, whether it being giving routine shots or assisting during a surgery. I chose to do my PREP Project on veterinary technology so that I was able to get an inside look into what I wanted to pursue, to make sure that it was the right choice for me. In May of 2015, I called the Beckwith Veterinary Hospital in Modesto, California and asked them if any of their veterinary technicians would be able to be my mentor. They told me to call Lori Rivera.
After completing my bachelor’s degree, I will take the necessary classes required by my state and the National Board of Emergency Medicine, so that I may obtain my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification. Obtaining my EMT certification and working in that field will be beneficial to me when it comes to being an Athletic Trainer. I have always had a passion for helping people, and a passion for the healthcare field. A few weeks later, similar injuries impacted my body, so I immediately decided to go to physical therapy in order to get me back on my feet - literally. All in all, I was fascinated with the work physical therapists did: From treating injuries, to rehabilitation, and to providing individuals with the confidence to continue with their passions. As a result of this experience, I proceeded to taking a class within my school, known as Regional Occupational Program, that dealt with healthcare professions. Little did I know that I would discover a philanthropic side to me that would lead me to want to pursue a career in the healthcare
Not just for my own injury, but just to gain knowledge about anything I could pick up. I decided about a year after my injury, athletic training and physical therapy were my passions and that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Little did I know that 3 years later, the exact same injury would happen to my other knee and I would change my career path again. This time was different mentally however, every time I would go to physical therapy, I would notice how quiet it was and how only a few people were there at a time. After doing a lot of research on sports medicine, and other professions available
I have known for years that I wanted to work in the realm of health science. I knew that I wanted to do something in sports medicine. When I took a deeper look into sports medicine I learned that there are many areas of sports medicine that you can get licensed in and that the sports medicine part would be a specialty to attach to it. So I took the list as started to look through it at each job that plays an affect in the sport medicine area. I narrowed in on Physical Therapy and then took the time to do some shadowing in it for my senior study.
Although I was focused on pursuing a career in the law I was also intrigued by the medical field. I was exposed to the world of medicine from a very young age. My mother, sister, and grandmother all had careers in the field. I was always the selected person to help them study for a quiz, practice a procedure on, and to hear about their stories from work. Their careers seemed fascinating.
