Mathematics is a subject which is regarded as important for attaining an improved outlook on events occurring in the natural world. Mathematics helps in improving critical thinking and stimulates problem solving abilities.

Mathematics comprises of different chapters and has even given way to another subject namely Additional Mathematics. Hence it’s imperative to have the basic notion of mathematics so as to be able to master the knowledge of Additional Mathematics. From its name itself, we get to know that it is a supplement of mathematics.

In this study, I will be concentrating in one topic in Additional Mathematics namely Trigonometry.

Gillmann (1991) stated “Trigonometry is a unit in which algebraic techniques, geometrical realities …show more content…

However it is found that students had difficulty in understanding some basic concepts of it and they had disinterest for the topic.(Akkoc, 2008; Durmus, 2004).” From this quote, I can deduce that the cause of failure in trigonometry is due to the most basic explanation. For example, not having the required knowledge of Mathematics trigonometry will absolutely hinder students’ performance in Additional Mathematics.

Based on examiner’s report, students have not been able to understand the concept of period. This is also confirmed by the examiner report for June 2003 paper 1 question 7 stating “very few candidates realized the meaning of amplitude or period and there were very few marks gained for this part.” Sometimes teachers take it for granted that students have really mastered the concept of period so they do not lay much emphasis on this …show more content…

It plays an important role in number theory and in the theory of music (Pythagoras was the contributor to the mathematical theory of music). Some fields namely pharmatology, probability, seismology, statistics, medical imaging and even psychology used trigonometry

Learning trigonometry in additional mathematics enables learners to extend the mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding developed in the ordinary level mathematics. Students as such are able to use the skills in the context of more advanced techniques. Learners are capable of acquiring a suitable foundation in mathematics trigonometry for further study in the subject.

Taking into consideration my own experience as student, the class was generally teacher centered that is the educator will deliver the content without taking into consideration the learning styles of the students. However it is not necessary that the learner will assimilate all the content delivered by the teacher. Contrarily to the traditional classroom, I believe that constructivist approach will be suitable for the learners as there will be more emphasis and focus on social and communication skills, as well as collaboration and exchange of ideas. Personally, I consider that effective teaching and learning to take place, students must express their feelings about the topic, to voice out their difficulties and anxieties as well as their enjoyment.
