Tuberculosis is considered one of the oldest diseases that affects almost every culture in the world. The health event epidemiology of Tuberculosis is mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is a bacteria that is introduced in the lungs and can transmit to other multi-organ systems. Patients who present with signs and symptoms of chronic dry cough over the past few weeks/months, fever, shortness of breath, and weight loss differential diagnosis must include Tuberculosis. Since the year 1993-2011, the morbidity and mortality rates of tuberculosis has decreased about 50% in all genders and races except in the Asian population. Based on the observational study design, cross-sectional study design is most appropriate for the advanced practice nurse to …show more content…
Most immigrants who come to the United States may not have adequate preventative or secondary care for immunizations and screenings. Immigrants could possibly have communicable diseases (McElmurry, Park, & Buseh, 2003). As of today, the incidence of tuberculosis is decreasing throughout the United States (McElmurry, Park, & Buseh, 2003). This epidemic requires advanced practice nurses to address this issue. Advanced medicine, treatment, and preventative methods help to decrease the spread of tuberculosis (McElmurry, Park, & Buseh, 2003). At one instance tuberculosis was limited to the homeless and immigrant population, yet due to the migration of people and close contact, infectious persons of tuberculosis it could be anyone in the community. With adequate teaching from advance practice nurses, patients are able to prevent and control the disease within the …show more content…
It is spread from an infectious person to a non-infectious person by mode of transmission through droplets. Initial infection of TB in the lungs can cause the bacteria can spread to the lymphatic system, and eventually it will get into the aveoli causing latent TB or active/primary TB (Knechel, 2009, p. 35).
Patients will present with symptoms of dry productive cough, chest pain, hemoptysis, and fever, night sweats, weight loss, and fatigue, loss of appetite, chest pain, and shortness of breath. (Williams, 2006). The diagnosis of tuberculosis is based on signs and symptoms, a positive ppd skin test, an abnormal chest x-ray, positive sputum culture, and will require immediate treatment. The interview with Mrs. Anna Newport was very touching. Throughout the video interview she talks about her experience as a teenager in the 1940s with tuberculosis (TB). She talks about how it was in the hospital or sanatorium, Dunham, in Cincinnati, her treatment, and life after. She found out she had TB as a teenager after her mother told her to the doctor because she had a continuous cough.
This is necessary however, for the world to see, through this work on TB, the health needs of the poor. This shows Farmers willingness to do whatever he must to help the improvement of global
A common theme that has been discussed regarding the adversities that immigrants experience when arriving to the America are the social and cultural clashes between immigrants and citizens. What I find interesting is the conflicts pertaining to the health care system. Based on previous lectures, immigrants tend to mistrust the American healthcare system due to difference in medical remedies and the language spoken. I know first hand that my mother would perfer to have a Ghanaian physician, as opposed to the general white American doctor. Anne Fadiman wrote a successful award-winning book called, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, which highlights how the cultural differences between the Hmong culture and American medicine jeopardized the health of a little girl named Lia Lee.
This is an ethical and moral duty nurse, added that threatens the health, religion or life of patients who avoid vaccination, other than of philosophical reason, you can protect patients from cross-transmission. Recently Poland Jacobson as you did with other vaccines, e.g., measles, mumps, rubella and varicella is recommended enacting influenza vaccination of HCWs (Healthcare Worker). This view was supported by the mandatory vaccination argue that supporters can be justified in a given moral safety record of the influenza vaccine. In addition, failure, his own, to achieve the required number to despite the 70 percent vaccination rate for employees of the results from Johns Hopkins University Hospital (JHUH) of volunteer programs, senior epidemiologist
Controlling the spread of infectious diseases through immunization is one of medicine 's most significant accomplishments. Vaccination programs are proven to be a cost-effective means of disease prevention that have saved millions from death. Medical providers play an important role in the promotion of vaccinations; they can promote vaccination by following the standards for Adult Immunization Practice which include a four-step process: ♦ Assess immunization of all patients at every clinical encounter. ♦ Strongly recommend to patients the vaccines that they need.
The disease can also be spread y kissing, sharing drinks, toothbrushes, lipsticks and
The primary focus of this paper is being able to vaccinate immigrant children once they are in the United States by developing a program. Immunizations have become an important tool that many countries use to protect themselves from disease thereby helping increase their population. Before immunizations diseases could wipe out much of a country’s population in less than a year. By using this tool to our advantage, we are helping to ward off certain diseases. One of the problems with re-emergence of diseases we thought we eliminated has been immigrant children bringing the disease to the US due to improper vaccination protocols in their country of origin or skipping vital vaccinations.
Shortage of Doctors in the United States There is a growing demand for doctors in the United States while there is a decline in the number of doctors from numerous Muslim countries. Due to the recent ban on “citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days” (Yasmin, web). This created fear for all doctors who were born in foreign countries which is more than “a quarter of the physician workforce” throughout the U.S. (Yasmin, web). This hurts the U.S. due to the fact that these doctors are here because we cannot keep up with the demand for physicians in the U.S..
1. What is the Latino paradox? Why does it exist? a. The Latino paradox was identified by researchers in the 1960s and it notion that Latino immigrants of lower income and education has low rates of mental health issues compared to whites who has higher education and income.
The Issue The concept of acculturation has been researched by the impact on health status and behaviors of immigrants. As a process, acculturation is present on multiple levels concerning an individual, one of which is the individual’s health. The acquisition of cultural elements of the dominant society, whether it be lifestyle practices, nutritional habits, or societal values is the defining way in which acculturation can affect health.1 The US Census Bureau has predicted that Latinos will account for a quarter of the nation’s population by 2050.2 In consideration to health, the Latino population faces various health disparities that set them apart from individuals residing in the US.
The arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas in 1492, started what may be described as a wave of infectious disease and death. With the discovery of the New World came a flood of colonist and conquistadors. As the Europeans explored and discovered foreign unknown lands, the natives had to deal with a foreign matter of their own. “Europeans and the African Slaves they brought inadvertently carried bacteria and viruses across the Atlantic that Native Americans had never encountered. ”(Campbell, 2008, p.3).
•The influenza infection is extremely infectious: When a contaminated individual coughs, wheezes or talks, respiratory droplets are produced and transmitted into the air, and can then can be breathed in by someone close-by. •A person who touches something with the infection on it and afterward touches his or her mouth, eyes or nose can get to be contaminated. •An influenza pandemic, for example, the one in 1918, happens when a particularly harmful new flu strain for which there 's practically no immunity shows up and spreads rapidly from individual to-individual around the world.
There are four available tests to diagnosis TB. These are skin test, sputum test, blood test and imaging test. The TB skin test The TB skin test [8, 9] is a widely used diagnostic TB test, and sometimes it is used to verify for latent TB infection. The TB skin test involves injecting a small amount of fluid called tuberculin into the skin in the lower part of the arm.
This is important evidence because it gives us conditions and results of what can happen if patients get lower quality care. Patients’ are not having enough time getting checked up by a nurse, and nurses would miss some diagnostics. Patients are getting sick because of the poor care they are receiving from nurses. The care patients can get is affected by a nurse shortage, “Nursing workload definitely affects the time that a nurse can allot to various tasks. Under a heavy workload, nurses may not have sufficient time to perform tasks that can have a direct effect on patient safety.
Nurses are critical for promoting health in the society. The profession is highly flexible, since they specialize in diverse operations in the medical field. Registered nurses, for instance, are responsible for the administration of medicine and inoculations to patients (American Nurses ' Association, 2000). Additionally, these professionals observe, record, and enlighten doctors of any changes in a patient’s health. Nurses interpret and evaluate diagnostic examinations to determine an individual’s condition, as well as making the necessary adjustments in patient treatment plans on their health progress.
