Perseverance is an essential trait for reaching your goals. Many dreams start far from reach, but perseverance changes dreams into reality. Throughout The Odyssey, there are many examples of perseverance. Odysseus and I share the trait of perseverance throughout our everyday lives.
I displayed perseverance when I fasted meat and chocolate for a month. There were many struggles throughout the month of my fast. I was constantly tempted to quit my goal when seeing my family and friends eat meat and chocolate. However, instead of giving up on my goal, I clenched my teeth, took a deep breath, and moved on. While I was on my fast, my friends were a huge obstacle; they continuously teased me by waving chocolate in my face and by offering me chocolate
The story of Perseus the hero is one that has a lasting impact on Greek mythology. However, there are two different interpretations of the story. There is the actual written version and there is the 2010 movie version directed by Louis Leterrier known as Clash of the Titans. In the movie plot it includes that the kingdom of Argos will be destroyed by Hades. Argos needs a hero and they ask Perseus to save their kingdom.
People and their actions are what determines their future. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus starts out with numerous ships and men. However, the only one who ends up surviving the multitude of obstacles is himself. The reason for this outcome is supported in the transition paragraph at the end of Book 12, which says “Odysseus tries to persuade his men to bypass Thrinacia, the island of the sun god, Helios, but they insist on landing.”
The Heroism of Odysseus and Louie Zamperini Emptiness is all they feel, there must be a way home, but how will they find it with so many obstacles in the way. In the books Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and The Odyssey Homer by Robert Fitzgerald, both main characters Louie Zamperini and Odysseus have proven that they are heros in the story. They are both lost and are in search for their way home although often, certain things get in their way. Through this tough journey they defeat each enemy that comes their way, well through a long period of time of course. The great Louie Zamperini was an olympic athlete who was very known in his town, he got drafted to the military during the war against Japan.
Persistence is the will to go on. A trait that is necessary to get through life’s obstacles. A person does not fight a lion by giving up, the person fights, with a will to succeed. Persistence is important. Living through life’s tough obstacles requires persistence.
In The Odyssey, the twenty years Odysseus was away from his family, Ithaca, and people took a greater toll on him than anyone else. Even though others had struggled, he had the worst time during the twenty years he was away. Looking at the effects the time had on Odysseus and his father Laertes were very different. Laertes decides to live in poor conditions along with some of his servants.
Perseverance and Survival are elements shown in almost every book. I believe everyone in the world should know how to persevere and to survive through all of life's obstacles. According to vocabulary.com, the definition of perseverance means not giving up. Also according to vocabulary.com, the definition of survival means continuing to live through hardship or adversity. According to merriam-webster.com, the definition of perseverance is the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it's difficult.
Odyssey Paragraph Odysseus, in the book The Odyssey by Homer, and I both showed self restraint in multiple different ways. One way Odysseus demonstrates self control is after he stabs the cyclops eye and the book quotes “Arms thrown wide for any silly man who bolted” (907). This showed moderation by him not rushing by the cyclopes and instead waiting for a better time. Another way Odysseus showed Caution was when he and his men went on the island with the lotus and Odysseus said “clear the beach no one taste the lotus” (898).
In the epic poem “The Odyssey” the main character and hero of this story is a wise king known as Odysseus. Throughout the story Odysseus portrays many different characteristics that belong to his personality as he tries to make his way back home to Ithaca. One of Odysseus’ traits is patience, which is used with many different characters as Odysseus uses this skill in his plans and strategies. The trait patience is important because, it is needed in real life scenarios, and can help keep someone calm or composed in tense situations. Patience also is useful because it can help an individual to be able to wait for long periods of times without getting upset or frustrated.
Odysseus is the main character in the book The Odyssey, this book is an epic poem with Greek gods, and goddesses. Odysseus in the book has many different features in his personality, but most important he is a hero. This character shows the value of patience in many different ways. The value of patience is a way of life, it is the action of waiting without getting upset or frustrated. This action is important because Odysseus portrays it throughout the whole story.
In book nine of Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus displays his intelligence, patience, and hubris when killing the Cyclops, Polyphemus. When Odysseus meets Polyphemus he introduces himself as “outis” meaning nobody. Lying about his name shows Odysseus’ intelligence. When Polyphemus fell asleep, Odysseus stabbed him in the eye and he woke up screaming “Nobody’s killing me”. (9: 455)
“… he gripped up two of my men at once and dashed them down upon the ground as though they had been puppies.” (21) This was the first Homeric simile that caught my eye. This Homeric simile gave me the impression that a giant was throwing humans brutally against the ground. With that small clip of a scene many people may predict that the giant kills everyone.
The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
The Odyssey and The Outliers portray that perseverance is essential to living a happy and successful life because conflicts are overcome and dreams are followed. Some will argue that overcoming conflicts does not take perseverance; However, in The Odyssey, after Odysseus and his men defeat the cyclops, Odysseus gives his men a pep talk to help encourage and inspire them. When Odysseus says, [“by courage, council and intelligence, we escape away”](210-211). He is reminding his men that they persevered through the trials they faced against the cyclops.
Heroism, tends to be difficult to define and remarkably ambiguous in literary works. In the Odyssey, however, Homer clearly defines a hero as a humble, determined, and loyal individual; thus, according to Homer, it is not enough to claim to be a hero, but it is also important to exhibit those qualities that Homer values as heroism. Odysseus, despite claiming heroism, upholds these traits inconsistently, as seen in his taunting of Polyphemus. In contrast, Telemachus, Odysseus’ overlooked son, dramatically grows up over the course of the epic and ultimately reveals his truly heroic qualities by the end of the poem. Thus, because Odysseus claims to be a hero, but fails to remain humble, determined, and loyal throughout the epic, he is not a hero.
Is perseverance is an essential human quality? In life, we are faced with endless misfortune and difficult decisions. A person can think of how they do in each difficult situation they face the same way a character in a movie goes through the character arc. An example of this is when your mom tells you she can't afford to send you to your favorite summer camp this year. You have two options, Accept that your family can't afford it or raise the money needed by getting a job.
