In the “Gettysburg Address” Abraham Lincoln shows that the idea of everyone being equal is strongly supported. Emily from “A Rose for Emily,” is oppressed by her father who passed away. Faulkners writes, “We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will” (Page 4). In the short story, Emily’s father is proven to have been oppressive to her after running off every young gentleman that came around looking to court Miss.

“Once we became an independent people it was as much a law of nature that this [control of all of North America] should become our pretension as that the Mississippi should flow to the sea” –John Quincy Adams (Henretta, p. 384). In the 1840s, Americans had a belief that God destined for them to expand their territory all the way westward to the Pacific Ocean. This idea was called Manifest Destiny. In the nineteenth century, Americans were recognized for coming together and building up one another for one cause: westward expansion.

Turner’s statement ‘since the days when the fleet of Columbus sailed into the waters of the New World, America has been another name for opportunity’(3) advances the view that America became a democratic land open to all as stipulated by the American constitution. It brought about the term ‘American dream’. The American dream was aimed at making America a free and equal society. Therefore, settlers from Europe saw a lot of opportunities for themselves: The constitution specified the absolute pre-eminence of individual rights for the first time in human history; settlers seized this idea and saw it as a font of limitless opportunities to better their lives and lives of their children.
And, of course, to the immigrants who make up 13 percent of the US population, it is a place where they were given a chance to live the dream. The American Dream. The dream composed of ideals which make America the great country it is today: democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity, and equality. The ideals rooted into our nation’s soul because like James Truslow Adams said in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstances of birth”.

The term “American dream” was coined by renowned writer and historian, James Truslow Adams, who considered America as a place where life will be better and richer. Since then, the United States of America has been considered as the land of equal opportunities and growth. However, the changes in the social and economic status of the population indicates that there is existence of social disparity in our society. Many people have and are still coming to America, seeking this thing we once knew as the American dream. The American dream has been around since 1776 but was later coined in 1931. (Novak, 2015). Is the American dream still alive today? Is the American dream still worth pursing?
The American dream is a dream of land in which life should be better and richer for everyone. It’s a land where people succeed to accomplish their ambition of a better life. Most of the people have a different way of defining this American Dream. Unfortunately, for some, it could mean wealth, status,or power whereas for others it could mean companionship, good morals, love, and amity. According to our Declaration of Independence, it entitles every man and woman the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It is the matter of common knowledge that the American Dream is a conception referring to a desire of having a social regulation in which every male and female individual is capable of reaching the fullest importance that is normally unattainable, and be distinguished by the community for their true substance, despite the fortunate conditions of the status. Moreover, this idea denies any limits or boundaries and provides equal opportunities for people of any age, gender, or race. “The Great Gatsby” and “Bodega Dreams” feature characters that most clearly represent a desire or indifference to join such a society. After all, the American dream is not different for a person of color in “Bodega Dreams” and “The Great Gatsby” because both characters view it as money, love, having a knowing name as well as being successful. There is no reason for the dream to be divergent for a person of another race.
