Teaching, in its most general meaning, is a process that facilitates learning. It is the application of knowledge, abilities, and aspects devised to provide necessary understanding to attain the educational needs of the person and of the society. This somehow presents the responsibility of the teachers in the realization of these primary goals of every educational institution. But this said profession does not have a universal image to people. A study by D. Hall and B. Langton (2006) presented both the positive and negative aspects of teaching. When it comes to job security, this was proven to be always in demand; that is, society will always need teachers and it is indeed a job one can have for a lifetime. But despite this, there is a little …show more content…
While the Occupational Esteem, which is the general public’s regard to an occupation by virtue of the personal qualities that members are viewed to bring to their core duty, matters to the image of this profession, which most of the time perceived by others more negatively than positively, this raises the idea of this study’s purpose to know the teachers’ perception of their employment: if it really fits the Occupational Esteem or the other way around. Basically as mentioned earlier, answers from the survey indicated factors that made the public view teaching as an attractive profession or not. These factors somewhat fit Feldman’s (1996) first, second, and fifth dimensions of underemployment: (1) more education than required by the job, (2) more skills or experience than required by the job, (5) low pay, relative to either a previous job or to others with similar educational background. This study excluded Feldman’s third and fourth dimensions of underemployment (involuntary employment in a field outside of area of education and involuntary employment in part-time, temporary or intermittent work) because it is not within the scope of this …show more content…
This is because of the fact that the reason one experiences happiness is subjective. Happiness as a subjective matter invites the fact of having different factors that can predict it. In Salami’s (2011) study about personality, happiness and the moderating role of emotional intelligence, he proposed that to increase one’s level of happiness is to develop self-awareness, and one of the reasons for developing self-awareness is by understanding one’s personality. Personality is introduced as one of the strongest happiness predictors. Personality is a set of generally steady and consistent traits or tendencies a person possess. It is also a natural behavioural response that individual will likely elicit in a given situation (Wilner, 2012). Paramount studies have tried to find how personality impacts on happiness. Among the personality theories established, there were a lot of research studies conducted regarding happiness and the Big Five Personality traits which proved to be universal in
In his article "In Pursuit of Happiness: Better Living from Plato to Prozac," Mark Kingwell describes how there has been many debates on the meaning of happiness for many years yet still a singular, justifiable definition eludes society. The pursuit to define and understand happiness has invited several debates, questions, arguments, and suggestions alike. In 1996, a hand full of genetic and behavioral studies suggest evidence that one’s achievable degree of happiness is genetically decided, with evidences showing that no achievement will change your happiness, you are either happy or you’re not. Some studies demonstrated a correlation between dopamine levels in the brain and expressions of personal satisfaction, while others indicated that
On top of teaching and essentially taking care of your students every day, the legal aspects of this career and having to maintain and be aware of new ones (especially during the pandemic) is overwhelming but necessary. Following and maintaining these requirements and responsibilities is part of what makes a teaching career so noble but also very intimidating and
One’s view toward happiness is not always limited to one point-of-view for the rest of their life. Gretchen Reynolds’ article In the New York Times Magazine does support the idea that people personalities are shaped by inborn qualities, however does not bring into account the individual decisions people may have later in
When a person's decided to be a teacher it's mostly because of a teacher they once knew that influence them in some way or another, whether they became a Doctor, Lawyer or even a farmer, their teacher, influence most likely made an impact. A teacher profession comes with a lot of responsibility and accountability so what a teacher does outside of work indeed matter, especially when it's an elementary or middle school teacher. Children are so impressionable and are shaped and molded by what they observe and hear from those they look to as role models. Young children dream, and aspiration can easily be crushed if their perception of the person they most trusted isn't what they perceived them to
Times are changing, but “teachers, crucially, are not self-sacrificing martyrs” (Jaffe). Even with extensive training, a teacher cannot and
The independent variable was happiness and this was operationally defined by the Oxford Happiness Scale, participants were allocated one of two groups (happy or less happy) before having to complete a Big 5 Personality test which was used to look at the levels of extraversion; the dependent variable. Materials: The materials that were used consisted of one happiness questionnaire given to each participant followed up by a big 5 personality questionnaire, each carried out in an empty classroom. Afterwards each participant was given a chocolate bar for taking part in the study. Procedure Participants were selected from volunteers from a school, college and university in Bristol.
People miss the fact that happiness comes from within. In an attempt to find joy – we must also be cautious about over excessive desire to acquire material objects and wealth. There is a delicate balance that must be reached between the pursuit of happiness, satisfaction, and contentment. While there are many conditions that fulfill ones emotional wellbeing, happiness and how we acquired it, depends upon the
Not many achieve happiness in their lifetime. Either they do not live long enough to witness it or they are not prepared for what their happiness is. Happiness is very subjective. Each person’s version of happiness is different. This version of happiness is universal.
“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops” states Henry Brooks Adams, a historian, educator, and author. In today’s society, teachers are undervalued and underappreciated for the huge part that they play in a child, teenager, and adult’s life. Teachers should be paid more because they contribute more to the future of the world than any other career, help students psychologically and financially, and most students in a survey chose that teachers need to be paid more than their annual salary. Teachers contribute more to the future of the world than any other career. They teach students social and intellectual skills needed to be an effective member of society.
I am pursing a degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I am passionate about education and excited to share the joy of learning with students. The perspective of wonder and sense of excitement that children bring into education motivates me daily. Teaching can leave a lasting impression in a child’s life and offers a special opportunity to shape the bright young minds of future generations. While many professions can be impactful, I believe the qualities of the person in the career position to be the most influential.
Why do people want to become teachers? There is low pay, long hours, little benefits, students have more rights than teachers. I want to be a teacher because I want to make a difference and change every child’s heart that I come into contact with. Teaching is one of those jobs where you get to be an undercover angel, because you are able to effect so many different lives by caring and teaching. You matter not only to one person in an office, but for 18-20 kids.
After many number of publications of papers, Trait Emotional intelligence was developed. Trait Emotional intelligence is assemblage of emotional self –perceptions located at the lower levels of personality. Trait Emotional intelligence is one’s own perception of own emotional abilities. This model overcomes the criticisms of ability model.
This happiness “set-point” can come to a point of equilibrium and be reset. Factors like heredity and the environment correlate to how a person feels and how he gets to moderate his mood swings. Yet, 40 percent of a person's happiness is something that he can control. Thus, it is safe to say that happiness is a choice. It just depends on the person to decide if he wants it or not.
A collection of philosophical, religious, psychological and biological approaches had attempted to define happiness and analyze its connections. Researchers have found that about 50% of people happiness depends on our genes, based on studies of identical twins, whose happiness was 50% correlated even when growing up in different houses. About 10% to 15% is a result of various measurable life circumstances variables, such as socioeconomic status, marital status, health, income, and others. The remaining 40% is a combination of intentional factors and the results of actions that individuals deliberately engage in to become happier. Studies have also found that most of us are born with a fixed “set point” of happiness that we fall in throughout our lives.
Teachers have to use different pedagogical approaches. They should participate actively in their learning and to assist professional development. The
