The underground railroad was a network for black people to escape north. They would go there to get shelter and to escape slavery. It was used by enslaved black people. Slaves wanted to escape to Canada where slavery was illegal. Fugitive slaves stopped for rest and food. The first challenge was to escape usually at night when there masters would be sleeping. That would make it so they would have better chance of not getting caught. They would hide in boxes, coffins and barrels. Other escaped slaves were feared of being caught. Fugitive slaves traveled 200 miles north to be free.
