Importance of sleep
Understanding Sleep
Humans spend more than a quarter of their life asleep. However, there are only a few, who actually know what sleep really is. Sleep is as important as food to a human body. The brain – the boss who controls our body and its functions regains its power when we are asleep. Many chemical reactions happen in our body even when we are still asleep. That is why we say that ‘our brain never sleeps’. To live fully, to study and work, it is necessary to fully relax. In addition, it is also the object of special care provided and benefited by you. One of the main types of rest is sleep. It helps to restores energy reserves of the nervous system that are spent during wakefulness. During sleep, there is a coordination of physiological, biochemical and metabolic processes which connects the correlations between the functions of the various internal organ.

REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
2. NREM (Non­‐rapid eye movement)

The NREM is then divided into 4 stages according to the depth. These cycles and stages of sleep are discovered with the use of electroencephalography (EEG) and have shown different EEG waves during different stages of sleep. Throughout the whole time of sleep, REM and NREM sleep alternate cyclically. However, it is not understood how these alternations function. The only thing we know is that irregular cycles and absence of sleep have indicated sleep disorders most of the time.

Normally the sleep begins with NREM stage 01 and then move towards stages 02, 03 and 04 in an orderly manner, showing that the sleep starts as falling asleep and continues to its depth. Then comes the REM sleep. Anyhow, a person never stays continuously in REM sleep, rather, cycles between stages of NREM and REM throughout the sleep. The greater part of the sleep consists of NREM sleep, while only 25% of the time is spent in REM
