The 34th, operating as a unit of the 24th Infantry Division along with many others endured some of the most horrific combat, under awful weather and terrain conditions during the War in the Pacific. The 34th Infantry Regiment securing the island of Mindanao lasted until late September of 1945. Their efforts resulted in upward of 22,000 Japanese soldiers surrendering. More than 10,000 Japanese Soldiers died in combat on Mindanao. From April to August of 1945 approximately 820 U.S. soldiers were killed in eastern Mindanao and 2,880 were wounded. The 34th was fortunate in that the casualty and injury rate was very low, considering the intensity of the battle.
When I first stumbled upon this scholarship from the American Legion, I knew right away that I wanted to apply for it because of the similarities between what the American Legion and what I both stand for. I few words that I would use to describe the American Legion and myself would be, service, integrity, and hard work. These are a few things that I take very seriously and attempt to involve in my life everyday. I pride myself on these high character traits and try to use them in my community, during sporting events, at home, and at my school. I also implement these traits while fulfilling my civic duties by doing service around my community. Some of these services involve, the 20 hours of service I am required to do each year to graduate
Chief: as per the conversation during our meeting, you asked me why I wanted to be a battalion chief (BC). In answer to your question, I have identified the following three reasons.
A topic that the Marine Corps has been debating for the past decade is whether or not there should be a policy regarding tattoos. It has been a constant struggle to balance the personal desires of the individual Marine and maintain the appearance of professionalism that is expected of the Marine Corps. A tattoo policy definitely needs to be in place in order to maintain a positive perception, sustain good order and discipline, and provide a standard of uniformity.
Surface Warfare Officers (SWO) are known as the backbone of the Navy. For years I have desired to obtain this position and have done extensive research concerning the attributes and requirements. Because I believe the Navy begins in the heart as well as the head, I know that becoming a part of the Navy would be life changing. Commissioning as a SWO would allow me to make a meaningful difference, as well as gain unparalleled leadership experience.
Veterans do a lot for us by defending our country and our home. We thank them by having a full day dedicated to our veterans. Three reasons that I think veterans should be thanked for are; going out to defend our country when no ones else does, I also want to thank you for demonstrating a great work ethic and doing all of this work for people you don’t even know.
How many people have been over seas to protect our country and saw the devastation that war can hold in person? Many people think about this question and wonder. A good majority of people have regular good paying jobs. Still many people dislike the fact of working for a business or office setting. Some people have been through the dark side and back. Military veterans have done more then the regular person and have seen the blood and gore of war, have seen death, received diseases like PTSD, have more experience in the real world, and have suffered in many ways to defend our country, All veterans who are over seas defending our country should be paid more then they already do. Since veterans who have served for our country over seas have
The role of the military officer today is very complex, challenging, and very rewarding. The transition into Warrant Officer Basic Course (WOBC) has displayed a few of those characteristics. Upon arrival to the WOBC we as newly appointed Warrant Officers were welcomed with open arms. Not only was the students eager to get started and to begin learning on how to become future 131As but the instructors were as eager to coach, influence and direct the class in the direction needed not only becoming newly certified 131A but to become the future of the 131A cohort.
You left your family and friends into a bloody war you could of died but you didn’t mind. You took your life for mine. You made things in life better then if you didn’t go into the war. My papa went into the war and he made it out safe. Those stripes and stars in our flag came from you. You saved many lives on the other side of the battle field. You chose to leave behind your loved ones and your life to die, make it home safe, or to have major injuries. Some people don’t care about the Veterans. But I care about veterans and all the people writing these essays.
Thank you for putting your life out there for us. Thank you for protecting people's families. And thank you for putting this country first. Veterans day is for people like you to be thanked for all you guys did for this country. But people like you deserve more. Veterans should not just be thanked one day and go on with their life. Veterans should be thanked everyday, they risk their lives for us leaving their families to do your duty. Even after Veterans day you guys will always be remembered so that is why we have to say thank you even if it is months after veterans day so thank you.
Women veterans’ use of the VA system has seem to have doubled in the last few years which has showcased the needs and preferences of women veterans. More and more women are seeking assistance with the Veterans Administration (VA) system for preventative and long term care. The core purpose of the VA is to provide the United States veterans with sensible access to quality healthcare in a veteran based atmosphere. The Veterans Administration, however has been falling short when handling women and their needs uniquely. Women have barriers with access, privacy, reproductive care, eligibility of knowledge of benefits to the proper healthcare delivery that most men that occupy the VA system doesn’t have to encounter.
As Israelmore Ayivor, leadership entrepreneur, states “Your patriotism is not measured by what your country can do for you. It 's all about what you can do for your country for your own benefit and for the benefit of unborn generations!” In fact, citizenship is a circumstance when a citizen is under the regulation or tradition of a country in which they have rights, and responsibilities to do. Every citizen has proper liabilities towards the community, state and country in which they live, and as a liable person everyone should accept these obligations in terms of moral and personal duties. Generally, this sense of responsibility is indispensable because no one is able to escape from their accountabilities such as paying taxes, protecting
It is necessary to balance international security relating to the events of the Imjin War. Continuing the Confucian theory of war, Confucians believed that if warfare is a fact of life, there will be a problem of balance. All life is a question of balance. There is a problem of usurpation, which is taking over illegally or illegitimately problem of the usurpation of civilian power by the military. In order to prevent and limit the practice of military power over civilian power, the military has to maintain a certain quality or character, therefore the military cannot be an independent profession, rather it has to be related to the civilian bureaucracy (Magagna, 11/3). The usurpation of civilian power by military power shows up in warlordism;
As my father and I sat at the kitchen table, I assumed my dad, Scott Garland, would have somewhat serious responses for being in the Army for 6 years. As he thought about the military all of his life changing memories flooded back to him. He had been stationed in many places and remembered each and every one of them. Hawaii, Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Japan which had taken part in changing his life. His coming of age happened while in the Army and it caused him to become the person he is today. The Army wasn’t a positive experience for my father and he would not consider doing it again. However, he is grateful he joined for through this experience he gained a lot of knowledge he otherwise
