To start off the main point of my essay, I learned several important things regarding terrorism. There are many different types of terrorism, such as state-sponsored terrorism, criminal terrorism as well as dissent terrorism. There are many reasons terrorism has become commonplace in society, it can be that radical extremists do not like our way of life, and try to destroy it, or it can involve conflicts with territory, globalization, and finally criminal terrorist acts done by the drug cartel. Surprisingly, there is more political and social issues connected to terrorism than I originally thought. For instance, it is stated as a social construct, terrorism is used to demonize people, societies and situations. With politicians, they love trying …show more content…
Drug cartels in countries such as Mexico and Colombia can smuggle drugs over to the USA, with most coming from Mexico. In the country of Mexico, the drug cartels' criminal actions threaten to undermine the government. The cartel is bribing officials to get away with these crimes, whether they are police, judges, or the military (Hoffman, 2009b). Criminal terrorism can bring the government to its knees, cartels can obtain an immense amount of power and wealth through the drugs they make and distribute in not only their own country, but America as well. Finally, dissent terrorism is when a group commits terrorist attacks against its government, with Pakistan, the terrorist groups have a way of being more violent, with tragic consequences. The Pakistani Taliban is a vicious group, Omar Khorasani, the group commander, has threatened to take away Pakistan’s nuclear weapons and even beheaded 23 Pakistani soldiers, even going as far as killing 142 people, with the victims being 132 children at a school in Peshawar. Despite this unfortunate mass shooting that has taken place, the Pakistan Military has backed up terrorist groups such as this, numerous times (CNN.com, 2016). For instance, in the Mumbai attack that occurred in 2008, the ringleader was actually arrested but was refused to be released to the Indian authorities, it is highly speculated that the Pakistani Military has tried to get Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi free from jail, despite his crimes. In 2015, he was released on Rs 2 million dollars bond, the equivalent of nearly 30 thousand dollars in the US, and was released from jail the next day (dawn.com,
Terrorism was flourishing in 1960’s America. Nearly every chapter of this book documents acts of terrorism by white people against black people: a leader’s house bombed, a protestor’s face smashed, girls going to church blown up, and finally, of course, Martin himself getting assassinated. MLK Jr. was not a moderate, at least in the last few years of his life, post-1965. At this point, he observed that the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill and the 1965 Voting Rights Act didn’t effect change of the type he was hoping for. He remained an advocate for nonviolence, but when riots broke out, he disclaimed their methods, but did not let society off the hook, claiming “riots are caused by nice, gentle, timid white moderates who are more concerned
Stop! Look around you for a second. What do you see? I see the government in every security camera I walk by. I see the government at every turn in an airport or at a sports game.
A great terror struck our nation September 11, 2001, two aircraft’s hit the world trade centers, killing 2000 people and injuring over twice as many. A third aircraft flew into the Pentagon while a fourth crashed in a rural area in Pennsylvania. This day will forever be engrained into history as one of the worst terror attacks faced in this nation. Nearly three years later, in an attempt to figure out what happened on that tragic day, scholars came together to discuss the possible parallels between foreign and domestic terrorist. The author, Michael Kimmel, outlines the possible cause of the 2001 attacks and offers us a link between both foreign and domestic terrorism.
American Security Post 9/11 After going through the immeasurable shock and horror of the 9/11 attacks, Americans have joined together to create a more secure nation than existed previously. “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve”, these inspiring words from President George W. Bush after the 2001 terrorist attacks (Bush “Address”). Immediately following these attacks the American government was working towards creating a more secure nation. After the terrorist attack on September 11th, the United States responded by creating the Department of Homeland Security.
Rough Draft: After the 9/11 attack many Americans have come to realize what terrorism really is, but for the kids that 9/11 was history to here you go. Terrorism today is the use of violence usually against other countries aimed towards politics. Targeting terrorist leaders might not make much difference, but it is cheap, it is low risk for the United States (Fisher,par.18). According to Max Fisher’s article going after terrorist leaders isn’t always the best, well the U.S. did that for the 9/11 attack, we ended up killing Osama Bin Laden the man who planned 9/11 out. Terrorist groups like the Al Qaeda, ISIS, and the Jihadist are a threat to mankind.
The Isis The United States should escalate the war against Isis because they kill many innocent people, they make many people suffer, and they are really mean people. Several people think it is not urgent to fight against Isis. They think there will not be an end to terrorism. But we have to fight them or else they will keep getting stronger, and stronger every day. They keep terrifying our community.
On September 11, 2001 American lives were changed forever. With the attack of the World Trade Center being only one of the many attacks plotted by the Taliban on U.S. soil. After thirteen long years of fighting, the Taliban finally declared their defeat to the U.S. While many believed peace was finally possible, a bigger group was on the rise. Thought to come from similar Taliban beliefs, the rise of ISIS was born.
The world today is facing a crisis and there seems to be no resolution in sight. The war on terrorism has been going on for many, many years and it appears as if the leaders of the world are baffled as to stop it or if nothing else, control it. Many scholars have a difficult time attempting to define a good definition for the word terrorism. Many believe it is a difficult word to define because there are so many interruptions to the word. It will depend on what part of the country one is in, but for the universal approach to the definition many believe terrorism is “the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce esp for political purposes” (Dyson, 2012, p. 19).
The term terrorism is inextricably intertwined with the notion of foreign actors unleashing widespread disaster on American soil. This notion is not unfounded and carries a very real and very dangerous threat to the US. While the US must of course be constantly vigilant with regard to the threat of an attack emanating from a foreign land, the US must also consider an equally dangerous threat that lurks in our own backyard: the domestic terrorist. Make no mistake, the use of the word domestic should by no means diminish, and should in no way normalize the malevolency these groups perpetuate. One is tempted to limit one’s thinking regarding domestic terrorism to the latest news story and how that may affect the US in the here and now.
On May 20th 2017 A white male University of Maryland student fatally stabbed Richard Wilbur Collins III, a black Army Lieutenant and student. Lieutenant Collins was just three (3) days shy of his graduation from Bowie State University. This murder was motivated by racist sentiments and was treated as an act of domestic terrorism after authorities reviewed the murderers phone and social media activity. Another recent incident was that of a 47-year-old man ramming a van into a crowd near a London mosque.
News reports regularly report on incidents involving terrorists or crazed gunmen laying siege to hordes of innocent people. What actions would you take if suddenly thrown into this situation? What actions were crucial for survival? Unfortunately, there is no 100% guarantee of coming out of a terrorist situation alive.
When people hear the word terrorism, they likely think of car bombings, suicide bombers, or a plane being hijacked. Through out the years terrorism has evolved into those assumptions and have even been portrayed in movies that way. Most people don’t understand terrorist and terrorism past an emotional state, but it is goes beyond that shallow perception. Fear isn’t the goal of terrorism; it is merely the means to the end. Once this change in mindset and perception occur, then terrorism can be viewed past their actions and their intent can be
On the other side, International terrorism involves people taking the weapon of terrorism for spiritual beliefs and other aspects. Terrorism has been never an end but means to an end. Even in case of specific terrorism, there is always certain social or economic objective to achieve. Individual terrorist carry protests against the system which is expressed in violent form. Martha Crenshaw substantiates this idea when she visibly defined terrorism as means to a political end.
Money laundering serves two purposes when it comes to terrorist activity. It conceals the illegal origin of the money and the illegal destination of the funds (Unger, 2013, p.21). Research has shown and experts agree the sale and trade of drugs is a sizeable financial contributor to terrorist organizations. For example, the Taliban profited from the trafficking of opium and taxing the drug in areas under its control. These funds were then used to support terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda (Unger, 2013, p.22).
FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM IN EASTAFRICAN COUNTRIES: CASE STUDY OF RWANDA INTRODUCTION 1. Terrorism is becoming global serious threat to international peace and stability.
