Unrealistic reactions in Marie de France’s “Eliduc”
In her lais “Eliduc” Marie seems to have several un-realistic views on the psychological complexity of love assuming that there are no hidden factors that could explain these behaviours.
Eliduc appears to have genuinely cared for his wife to whom he had been married to for several years. It looks as though he had feelings for his wife, Guildeluec whether it was romantic feelings or friendship feelings is not speculated on by Marie. We know that during their marriage the married couple are faithful to one another “They lived happily for several years, since it was a marriage of trust and love” (page 1) but Marie de France does not speak about the depth of their love or if their love is “true
Initially Marie didn’t seem to show much affection towards her, the Author aided this feeling by constantly referring to June as a “she” which makes her seem more like a object of burden. Erdric didn’t describe June like a person is rather she is connected to other people or beings “ she was like me.” and “Sometimes I thought she was more like Eli.” The repetition of words such as “like” that connect June to people Marie knows which later act as form of attraction which leads Marie to love June. In fact the author's word choice leads me to infer June became Marie's favorite for “ I would want to hold her against me tighter than any of the others.”
Because of this, she’s expected to love him no matter what. The reasons stated within the passage would make no sense to any ordinary person, and would not be recognized as reasons to love someone. “She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room with long strides. She loved the intent, far look in his eyes when they rested on her, the funny shape of the mouth”(pg 2). In order to justify her servitude to him, she unconsciously attempted to look for valid reasons to love him, which didn’t exist, which resulted in these inadequate
Meursault is used to sleeping around with her that he does not value love she provides for him. “A minute later she asked me if I love her… I didn’t think so”(35). He is honest, but is much direct about it, but he cannot love

The audience can examine how he displays love as he systematically maps the facets of religion, sexual desire, love from a parent, family member, child or friend. Irving explores the distinction between wanting to be loved and wanting to love another, which ultimately originates from the moment an individual is born.
Marie De France is scornful at the fact that the queen must be disloyal to her husband as she is not truly in love with him. I believe that Marie De France wrote her lais in a hope that one day her audience will understand and start to accept women into being in more influential roles; she wishes that she can influence women to want to become powerful and have more of a say in their future and who they will marry. Her lais seem to want a change to come by mocking how social order is in her time, pushing forward the idea of finding true love, and forcing the idea of giving women their own mind and love whoever they

Jean Laffite was an American patriot, a famous pirate, and, a traitor to all. Laffite has spied for Britain, Spain, and America. Jean betrayed all but America. He was one of the best spies the united states had had at the time. He could hire other people to do his spying instead of risking his own life, but he did it all by himself.
In “Lanval” by Marie de France, Lanval is a hero, though parts of his journey are sometimes hard to identify as herioc. Lanval’s story follows the basic elements of the monomyth, or Hero’s Journey, when read closely. He begins his journey in a vaguely unsatisfying ordinary world where he is unappreciated and where “he could see nothing that pleased him” (52). Leaving that world, he enters into the world of Queen Semiramis, wherein he is not only beloved of the Queen but assured that “he would never again want anything / he would receive as he desired” (135-36). When Lanval is challenged by his Lady “if this love were known / you would never see me again”, he accepts his quest readily (148-49).
She exists in a time when women are classified as objects of beauty and property, and her heart trouble suggests that she is fragile. Louise’s initial reaction to the news of her husband’s death suggests that she is deeply saddened and grief stricken when she escapes to her bedroom. However, the reader is caught off-guard with Louise’s secret reaction to the news of her husband’s death because she contradicts the gender norm of the 19th century woman. Her contradiction to the stereotype / gender norm is displayed when she slowly reveals her inward
Through this, she herself had stated she invented parts of the story to fill in the spaces. “I did my best through other sources from the period and place to discover the world they would have seen and the reactions they might have had. What I offer you here is in part of my invention, but held tightly by the voices of the past.” She partially invents aspects of the story for lack of evidence. For example, during the marriage or the original Martin Guerre and Bertrande before he leaves, they are unable to have child for several years.
Mariah Hobbs English 295-014 9 February 2018 Unit 1: Analytical Essay Marie De France's Lanval In Marie De France's short narrative poem, Lanval, she illustrates through her characters how love, desire and fidelity go hand and hand. Lanval is described as, "a very noble vassal" (line 3) of King Arthurs court but soon becomes troubled by desire's temptations. Many of Marie De France's lays contain elements of magic and mystery. In this case, she tells the story of a human and a supernatural being becoming lovers and the connection between the two different worlds.
In the story of “The Lady with the Dog”, the character Gurov’ character changes because of the events that occur in the story. At the beginning of the story, Gurov seems heartless, he does not respect the people around him including his wife, “he has begun being unfaithful to her long ago -- had been unfaithful to her often, and, probably on that account, almost always spoke ill of women, and when they were talked about in his presence, used to call them "the lower race” (172). He also does not feel anything toward women and thinks “their beauty aroused hatred in him and the lace on their linen reminded him of scales” (175). Love could be a reflex action. People find themselves victim of it; frequently in the worst place, time and circumstances
Western Literature serves as the foundation all literature. In Marie de France’s poetry, she incorporates the work of Homer, the Bible, and Ovid into her own poetry. Both Marie and Homer use detailed writing styles in order to portray their devotion to family and their Gods. Similarly, Marie borrows inspiration from the Bible in order to show her devotion to God as a savior. She also uses Ovid’s stories in order to depict morals throughout her fables.
During the era in which this short story was written, southern authors had a major influence on the way the culture was going to grow with racism, and also the way people loved each other. Kate Chopin, a traditional author who believed in southern ways, exemplifies how race and the characteristics of conditional love played a role in her story. In “Desiree’s Baby,” the author, Kate Chopin, provides an illustration of conditional love exemplified by the character, Armand, towards his wife and child; furthermore, Chopin provides instances of irony, elements of surprise, foreshadowing, and symbolism to prove that Armand’s love for both of them was not the unconditional love typically felt and portrayed by women, such as Desiree, during this era. Throughout the story, the readers notice different times where Chopin uses elements of surprise. One major surprise is when Armand opens the letter from his mother and finds out that he has African American in his bloodline.
This is just the beginning of their relationship, and Catherine is already developing it into something much more meaningful without Frederic realizing it. Catherine is trying to protect herself from being hurt again and she’s not fooled by his answers, but she accepts them because she knows that the risk is worth it. She believes that she can change his lifestyle and make him into a loyal man like her fiancee once was. Frederic, on the other hand, isn’t ready to commit and thinks that Catherine is crazy, but he’s attracted to her and will say anything he can to sleep with her. Frederic is naive and initially doesn’t want to fall in love as he admits, “I knew I did not love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her.
